USB no longer bootable?

One other thing, did you run make_bootable from the make_bootable file on flash drive and not from another place.

I ask because I did that once and had the same result as you... won't do it again.

Yeah, I ran it from the flash drive. This is really puzzling me!

Go to the Limetech website.  Click on the Support tab, then pick Videos and watch the Initial Setup video.

I can't do that. unRAID 6.1.9 does not completely boot (i.e., dev/disk/by-label/UNRAID not found error, and then eth0 not getting an IP address). I can't access the GUI. Even my keyboard that is plugged in refuses to work so I can't even enter commands manually.

I think Frank1940 meant go to https://lime-technology.com/videos/ from your browser, not from the server GUI.

Ok, this is beginning to sound like a comedy of errors..

Re-boot, the whole process not the server, and start from scratch..

I'm not an expert here but this is what I would do along with the videos, follow with caution.

1. Find a new fresh USB flash drive 16GB or less. I prefer standard Sandisk.. Some systems may have had issues with bigger drives.

2. Format the flash Drive Fat32.

3. Install a fresh version of v5 on the new flash drive. You can get that here https://lime-technology.com/download/

4. Run make_bootable from that flash drive.

5. Insert the flash drive in your server, use a USB 2 slot.

6. Start your server and enter BIOS. You will need a monitor attached.

7. Check to make sure BIOS is set to start from the USB flash and the USB flash is set to look like a HHD in BIOS and delete/remove other drives as boot drives.

8. Save those settings and exit and see if your server starts.

9. If the server started get it's IP address from your router.

10. In your browser type in that IP address and hit enter, it should take you to the server web GUI.

The array shouldn't be started because your drives will be unassigned at this point, but the server should be.

DON'T START THE ARRAY or ASSIGN DRIVES at this point.

What happen? Did your server start?

Yes, this works. My first/initial problem was recovering my 5.0 server. Check! Following Squid's recommendation to use Kill Disk to wipe the drive fixed the boot problem. My server is running right now and I have access to the files.

My problem now is that I am trying to upgrade unraid to 6.1.9. This is where I encounter errors while unraid is loading from the USB stick. Maybe I should start a new thread with only that specific problem?

If your server is running connect to it via telnet and type in the IP address.

I can't help if you are on a PC, I can only do it from Mac but the idea is the same.

Once logged in to the server check if it can run 64 bit (v6) or 32(v5) type.

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -Gq "flags.* lm " && echo '64bit' || echo '32bit'

IF you get 64bit from this command, it sounds like you have some plugin (or docker) that you installed for ver5 that is not compatible with ver 6 in a really bad way.  (90+% of all version 5 plugins are incompatible BTW!)  That is why a complete format was recommended as the way to update from ver 5 to ver 6.  You then copy over just a few files from your old ver 5 backup so that you don't lose your configuration setting.

You could also print out hard copies of all the setting pages of ver 5 starting with 'Main' where you made changes.  Then make and boot from a virgin copy of ver 6 and set everything up again using the information from your printouts as a guide.

It says 64bit.

What puzzles me is that I tried:

1)Running a clean V6

2)Running V6 with the .key file only

3)Running V6 with all the config directory

I did all of the above both on the same USB drive V5 works fine on and also on a new flash drive I just purchased.

To be clear, when I do any of the above, I get to the point where unraid is loading and then get a bunch of errors. I do end up at the command prompt, but my keyboard is not working and the eth0 adapter is not working.

Not sure if it would make a difference and don't see why it would but stranger things have happened.

Did you try a previous version of v6 like 6.1.8 or 6.1.7 (doesn't look like  6.1.7 is up any longer)?

Maybe you have some other hardware incompatibility like add on cards..

Maybe if you post your system components someone may spot something.

Here are some screenshots from the loading process and the errors it generates.

I have the following

gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P motherboard

AMD CPU (hexacore don't remember which model)

16 GB ram

560 GTX (usually runs headless but I needed the screen to diagnose)

Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Tuner

ATI TV Wonder HD 650 tuner

Flash Drive is Kingston G2 101 8GB stick

Many HDDs of various types.

I did try 6.1.8 but that did not work either.

Did you try pulling the tuners out?

It is a PITA but I guess I could try it. Although I don't see how that would allow v6 to work when v5 works fine with the tuners.

I agree but as I said stranger things have happened.

It's odd that from your images that it looks like the flash can't be found.

Maybe someone with more hardware experience could chime in here..

I don't know a whole lot about PC type hardware since I've only been using Macs/Apple since 1981.

But I do know, from reading here, that some SATA cards did affect hardware from V5 to V6.

:o :o :o

It works, at least partially! When I boot without both cards (I haven't tried isolating each one), it loads unraid 6.1.9 fine. However, I am still unable to connect to my HDCP for an ip address. I am able to enter commands with my keyboard, so I could potentially try out or diagnose further with additional help.

Type    diagnostics  at  the command prompt.    Then power down the server--- type  powerdown  to do that.  You should find a diagnostics zip file on the flash drive either in the root  or log folder.  Attach it to your next post.

I was not able to replicate the boot without errors ..... >:( . Can't use my keyboard to type in at prompt....

Every time i've tried since, I get the same errors.

I ran memtest86 for many hours but came up with no errors.

I notice that during loading, there are several lines that say something to the effect of :

"Unable to enumerate USB devices"

OK, I think the issue is solved now. It turns out that the problem is some sort of issue between the USB 2.0 ports, the Network card and the Unix USB drivers.

This issue affects several Gigabyte AMD motherboards including the 970A-UD3P and the 990FXA-UD3. Turning on IOMMU in the BIOS will fix the problems.
