[Solved] "Device is Disabled: Contents Emulated" after upgrade to v6

Featured Replies

I upgraded from v5 to v6 today.

I'm now getting an error indicator on one of the drives stating "Device is disabled" with a red X.

I don't see anywhere to enable the drive and a search of the forums is yielding confusing results (possible hardware failure?).

How do I test the drive, enable or repair/replace it as needed?

Thanks.

SMART for the disable disk looks fine, but others look problematic, and you need to check them before enabling disk7:

Parity looks bad:

Device Model:     ST3000DM001-9YN166
Serial Number:    W1F0TKQQ
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   0x0033   097   097   036    Pre-fail  Always       -       4384
187 Reported_Uncorrect      0x0032   001   001   000    Old_age   Always       -       809
197 Current_Pending_Sector  0x0012   100   100   000    Old_age   Always       -       64
198 Offline_Uncorrectable   0x0010   100   100   000    Old_age   Offline      -       64

This one could be ok, but should be checked:

Device Model:     WDC WD30EZRX-00DC0B0
Serial Number:    WD-WCC1T1059928
197 Current_Pending_Sector  0x0032   200   200   000    Old_age   Always       -       1

This one is probably OK but it wont hurt to make sure:

Device Model:     ST31500341AS
Serial Number:    9VS0E8QB
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   0x0033   067   067   036    Pre-fail  Always       -       1375
187 Reported_Uncorrect      0x0032   001   001   000    Old_age   Always       -       194

Normally I would recommend changing parity disk right away but since you have a disable disk and others with possible issues, I would do an extended SMART test on all three disks and decide what to do next depending on the results.

Thanks! How do I run a SMART test? I don't see it in the "Tools" section.

Found it. It only ran for a few seconds before generating "Errors occurred - Check SMART report" on the Parity drive.

Attached log.

Like I suspected parity disk is bad:

# 1  Extended offline    Completed: read failure       90%     29469         450692064

Run the test for the other two.

  • Author

Taking a long time to run. There's no way I can queue up multiple drives to test?

  • Author

While waiting on these tests, since I know the parity drive is bad, how do I go about replacing it?

Since one drive on the array isn't enabled, I'm not sure where to start here.

  • Community Expert

You can do both at the same time.

Disk 4

197 Current_Pending_Sector  0x0032  200  200  000    Old_age  Always      -      1

Short test results attached.

If the other disks pass the SMART test you can do a new config with a new parity and all your other disks, do you have a spare?

I just purchased a new 3TB with the intention of expanding the array. I can use it to replace the parity drive. Do you have a link to instructions on how to perform this?

  • Author

I don't understand why disk 7 is showing disabled. Would someone be able to explain this? The drive seems healthy and I can't see anywhere to enable it.

Short SMART test is not enough, you should do the extended test, it will take several hours, if they pass this is what you need to do next:

1-take a screenshot of current disk assignments

2-power off server and install new parity disk

3-start server, stop array (if started), go to tools and click new config

4-reassign all disks except the new parity, leave it empty

5-start array, make sure all disks mount and data is available

6-if yes, stop array, assign new parity and start array to begin the parity sync

After step 4 disk7 will be enable.

  • Author

Ok. I will start the extended tests now. Will take about 6 hours to complete.

One more thing, if you've written anything to disk7 after it became disable you need to copy it to another disk or another computer before clicking new config, or you'll lose that data.

I believe that it only became disabled today when I upgraded to v6 (I hadn't noticed anything before).

Just so I'm clear... even though the parity drive has failed, and disk 7 is disabled, the data from the other drives will still be enough to rebuild?

  • Community Expert

After doing a the new config you will only rebuild (sync) parity, since disk7 SMART looks good I'm assuming (and hoping) it's OK, it might not be, but since your parity is bad there's not many options, if the parity sync fails then we have to see how to proceed next to minimize data loss.

No - you are not going to be able to rebuild anything with the disks in the state they are and with parity failing.  What you are trying to get to is a state where the existing data on the disks is accessible.  You may still end up with some problem files because of the large number of pending sectors.

I would assume that you already had the reallocated sectors and pending sectors on the disks while you were running v5.    However since v5 did not monitor SMART attributes as standard you would not have got any warning about them unless you manfully ran SMART reports.

  • Author

Ok. I'll give it a go when the parity check completes. Possibly tonight or maybe tomorrow.

  • Author

;D

Success! All drives working now. Parity is rebuilding.

Is this old parity drive trash now? It is out of warranty. I'm assuming it is now physically toast and I should just dump it.

  • Community Expert

You can try preclearing it for a few passes but doubt it will be reliable, I would just trash it.

  • Author

Wonderful.

Thanks so much for all your help. I've ordered a new drive to add expansion (what the new parity was going to be used for).

Now I just have to learn how to use the dockers and try to install CouchPotato and Sonarr.

Note that ANY drive with a non-zero value for pending sectors can mean that you may have trouble with corruption if another drive fails and needs rebuilding as a rebuild needs all other drives plus parity to be functioning perfectly for the rebuild to be 100 percent effective.

Pending sectors are sometimes cleared when you next write to the sector.  The recommended way to do this would be to rebuild the drive in question to a spare drive and after that the drive can be put through a preclear cycle to see if the pending sectors goes back to zero.  If it does not then the drive is not in a fit state to be used as a data drive in unRAID (although it may function fine as a back-up drive).  If you have no spare drives then an alternative is to try and rebuild the drive back onto itself to see if that clears the pending sectors, and of not then look to acquiring a replacement.

You should also monitor any drives that show a significant number of reallocated sectors.    While reallocated sectors are not of themselves a bad thing, if the number keeps growing it is likely that the drive will fail in the near future.

+1

I assume the other two disks passed the extended SMART test and should be ok for now, but yes, keep an eye on those values, much more easy with v6 if you have notifications on.
