HotPlug/-unPlug of Drives (via Unassigned Devices PlugIn)

Featured Replies

hi there.

being a happy camper with unRAID for a few months now, all is running as expected.

now, from time to time i have the need to copy over lots of data to my unRAID box and it's simply not meaningful to to that via network from an other box. i've enough drive slots free and so the most easy way of doing this, is using these slots and mount these drives.

question: if the underlying hardware is capable of hotplugging sata/sas devices, can/will unRAID cope with these hotplug events? will it correctly identify newly added drives (and afterwards show them up in the Unassigned PlugIn) and removed drives (precaution is followed: any drive which should be unplugged isn't mounted or active in any way).

---

Unassigned PlugIn: just added it a few days ago and played with it a little bit. on one drive i used the default script and this drive doesn't go into standby anymore (green round bubble). the other (unmounted) drives are in standby-mode (grey round bubble). i tried to remove the script from the drive (and the corresponding icon signals it's deactivated; log shows nothing). i did not use this drive (it was pre-cleared), didn't mount it, nor anything else. a forced "Spin Down" (via Array Operation) doesn't help either.

at the moment i do complete shutdowns of the unRAID systems (and host hardware) to be totally on the safe side. but as soon as i'll host more VMs on it, that wont be a (good) solution anymore.

question: how to get it back to standby mode?

thx., alot for any help.

unRAID does not support hot-plugging of drives that are in use in the array/cache.

For drives that are unassigned then unRAID supports hot-plug just fine as long as your hardware supports it.  I regularly hot-plug both SATA and USB drives to use outside the array.  If you are monitoring the syslog then you should see the messages for these drives being recognised.    What is NOT supported is a tidy eject functionality, but as long as you are sure any writes have been committed before trying to remove a drive this should not be an issue.

Having said that I am not sure if I have checked that Unassigned Devices supports hot-plugging of SATA drives.  I would assume that it does as they appear as /dev/sdX devices the same as USB ones but I could be wrong.

yeah, i know this. and still hope, that lime will (someday/maybe) support it on suitable hardware. would make that "replace bad  drive"-action much easier. :-)

ok, so how do you meant to understand your sentence "I regularly hot-plug both SATA and USB drives" then?

thx.

I have found that you CAN hot-plug in a replacement drive as longs as the array is stopped.

What I mean is that I am typically mounting the drive manually from the command line so do not look in the UD GUI to see if it has recognised the hot-plugged SATA drive.  In other words it is definitely running fine at the Linux level but I have not checked the UD level although I would be surprised if it is not handling it.  Not near my machine at the moment to check this out.

ok, thx. so far.

if you have time/fun to check next time you're in front of your machine, would appreciate that.

Just checked - and hot-plugging a SATA drive worked fine with the UD plugin.
