March 17, 201610 yr Hello, I am just wanting to know if the AMD gpu's pass-through to vm's easier than NVIDIA? It seems that this is the case when I search through the forum. I currently have one gt 8400 I believe as the default system gpu and a gt 730 for my win7 vm. I haven't had any success passing the 730 to the VM though I'm still working on it. So I'm just wondering if people have more success with AMD. I'll be using the vm for basic games and my main desktop pc.
March 17, 201610 yr The AMD situation is easier if there is only the AMD GPU in the system, if you have an iGPU or the Nvidia is the second GPU in the system then Nvidia seems to be preferred for how it handles force stops and reboots of the VM. Some AMD cards will not handle a force stop or reboot well and unRAID has to be powered down to get it working again. Some people do have Nvidia GPUs as the primary GPU and passed through, but as it wasn't something I was keen on doing, I don't know the particulars.
March 18, 201610 yr My experience: HD6450 - worked straight out of the box, no tweaking required. Used i440fx & Seabios, can handle as many cores and as much memory as you want to throw at it Firepro W7100 - was very frustrating until I realised you can't force stop, but easy once you know what to look out for. Use OVMF & i440fx. No memory or core restriction either
