March 20, 201610 yr Event: unRAID Disk 5 error Subject: Alert [TOWER] - Disk 5 in error state (disk dsbl) Description: WDC_WD10EADS-00L5B1_WD-WCAU4A602099 (sdg) Importance: alert I don't understand the error state. I can't re-activate the thing. There are no SMART errors. Why is it being disabled? tower-diagnostics-20160319-2001.zip
March 20, 201610 yr Read this while we talk about your specific situation: What do I do if I get a red X next to a hard disk? Not entirely clear from your diagnostics what the situation is. I don't really see anything that indicates disk5 disabled. The syslog only covers about 5 minutes after boot. Did you collect these diagnostics before the disk was disabled? SMART for disk5 looks OK. There is a disk8 that appears briefly in the syslog as a new disk then it is gone later. Can you tell us anything more?
March 20, 201610 yr Author Just starting to read what you linked. I'm afraid I had already restarted the server before gathering the logs. First think I tried was a reboot, then I posted here... so unfortunately, I didn't see the notification about not rebooting before getting logs until too late. Disk 8 is a new disk which I purchased today to expand the array. I popped it in and after disabling the array, attempted to add it (didn't work due to the red X). How do I deal with these problems? I had to replace my parity drive last week (I posted about it earlier. I was also getting the Red X then.) Continuing to read...
March 20, 201610 yr Author Finished reading... understood most of it... I think. I'm fairly sure the cables and controller are fine. I'm wondering if I should enable the drive again and then run a full SMART test on all the drives overnight. In other news, why can't I find any instructions on how to add a new/additional drive in V6? Do I still need to preclear?
March 20, 201610 yr Author Rebuilding now. Will attempt to add the new drive after the rebuild is complete. Is there any way to do a deep test on all my drives from within UnRAID? Aside from a SMART test (or is that all i need?).
March 20, 201610 yr Author Did you preclear any of these drives? Yes. All were precleared when I was on the earlier version of unRAID.

Aside from a SMART test (or is that all i need?). Extended SMART test is good way to test a disk in use, it will take several hours per disk as it reads all sectors, then look at the logs to check if they all passed.
March 20, 201610 yr Author Extended SMART test is good way to test a disk in use, it will take several hours per disk as it reads all sectors, then look at the logs to check if they all passed. I will start it tonight when I go to bed provided the pre-clear on this new drive is completed by then.
