Understanding How Hard Drives Work

Featured Replies

A lot of users on this site seem very knowledgeable on the fundamentals of how hard drives work, how redundant arrays work, how parity within unRAID works, different file systems, file system repairs, etc.

We should have some sort of sticky with links to some resources for enthusiasts who would like to understand what they're doing and why they're doing it rather than just typing in commands blindly.

EDIT: It seems the unRAID manual  would probably be a good place to start!  Any other fundamental primers on how disks work, how they interact with OSes, other drives etc. would be great!
