I would be interested to hear any experiences with a power loss during a write and when the unraid server is idle. It's the same with most modern filesystems in multitasking environments. any process could have something opened, or a directory could be opened by the kernel. A sudden loss of power could result in corruption somewhere. Usually this is not a problem and the filesystem can be fixed/recovered. I only mention this because about a year ago I had a power loss and the system came up requiring a file system check. The check revealed a corrupted directory entry which was difficult to remove manually. I think this problem could occur on NTFS, ext3 or reiserfs (unRAID). so I would not point to unRAID, but to a sudden shutdown. It is best to consider a UPS and a graceful shutdown.
