Looking into maybe switching from FreeNAS

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have a friend who told me to look into switching.  I have been using FreeNAS 9.3.x for awhile but looking into maybe changing.

I have an Intel S1200BTL server board with 32gb ram.  I have 2 IBM M1015 cards installed flashed in IT mode.  With ZFS right now I have to pools. tank and tank2

Tank is 8x 3tb drives in RAID2Z

Tank2 is 4x 2tb drives in RAID1Z.

My main issue is I have 2 jails that automate my media files.  In one jail is sabnzbd, sickrage, couchpotatoe and transmission.  The other is MySQL for my Kodi database.

I want to keep this simple to use.  I have been told can do this with UnRAID but wanted to ask if true and how hard?

I also use the nzbToMedia scripts to handle my downloaded media.

Dear friend

I was use unraid since v5, I love with this OS. It simple to expand by adding driver.

For your data, it not 100% need because time to convert will be .. exeption Y will begine with fresh system.

ZFS is the best of data protection for me at momend.

Regard

It definitely sounds like unRAID would support your needs.  The main issues will be that unRAID is different, so understanding the terminology and concepts - and the data conversion.

unRAID supports running applications via Plugins, Dockers, and VMs (under KVM).  Dockers are preferred and setup is pretty automated - the Community Applications Plugin will help you get everything setup.  Sab, Sickrage, CouchPotato, Transmission, etc - all are available as Dockers.

The unRAID storage array is quite different than ZFS.  It is comprised of disks with independent file systems (mixed sizes Ok) plus a parity drive (two parity drives are supported under unRAID 6.2, in public beta).  XFS is the preferred file system for data drives.  The Unassigned Devices plugin can help you mount drives with other files systems in order to copy the data on them to the Storage Array - or you can copy over the network.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try to stand up a small unRAID test server on different hardware using the trial license.  Play with Dockers, the storage array, and potentially VMs.  You want to get comfortable with the unRAID landscape before you start planning a big conversion.
