March 24, 201610 yr I am looking to upgrade my unraid server. I need the power, as it also functions as a plex transcoding server. Currently I have a g1820, but I was looking into buying something beefier. I would prefer not to change my motherboard, so I am looking to buy something compatible with lga1150. People are raving about the g3258, but the reason is that it is "unlocked" and easy to overclock resulting in i3-like performance. My question is, would it be safe to do that to a server? I wouldn't look to take it to the limit, just "nudge" it a bit. From what I have read, this is the only benefit of the 3258 over the 3260 (which is cheaper). Without overclocking is the 3258 considerably faster than the 3260 (or other comparable in price CPUs)? Should I maybe look it into other cpus (within the 1150 limits)?
March 24, 201610 yr The smaller cache and the lack of HT on the Pentium really makes it slower than a decent i3 in general use. I'd go with an i3-4170 and forget about the Pentium.
March 24, 201610 yr I concur, go with the i3 you don't want to be overclocking a server it can introduce unstable elements.
