[Support] binhex - rTorrentVPN

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, hope you all had a great Christmas.

Anyway, got rTorrentVPN working with "ivacy" VPN which uses VPN_PORT as 53.

My supervisord.log contains the following lines:-

2016-12-28 07:15:36.950867 [warn] VPN_INCOMING_PORT not defined (via -e VPN_INCOMING_PORT), downloads may be slow

and

Wed Dec 28 07:15:48 2016 WARNING: No server certificate verification method has been enabled.  See http://openvpn.net/howto.html#mitm for more info.

Both are warnings and things do seem to be working OK, do I need to do anything about them? What?

Cheers DC

So the warning about incoming port is mine, your VPN provider will need to support the ability to receive inbound traffic, if they don't allow this (and many don't) then speeds will be low. The other warning is generated from openvpn and is regards authentication method, if you are connected to the webui though it looks like you have authenticated successfully and thus can ignore this message.

Oh, damn :S

My issue is that I use the rutorrent to be able to use the app "BarMagnet" on my iOS devices (the only I could find to control Torrents with iOS!).  I had to install a certificate to be able to use it, but now I have it, I was able to use the rutorrent HTTPRPC to add my rtorrentVPN docker (using my WAN IP with a port fwd to port 9080 (port I used for the HTTP version).

I could use the rtorrent XMLRPC, but I really don't know how, any idea ??  What port I can connect from the Internet to the rtorrent XMLRPC.

dunno if your still interested but i have slackened the restriction, you can now get both web ui's running at the same time by setting the value for key ENABLE_FLOOD to "both".

Hello,

I just installed rutorrent and am loving the speeds. I've set up the folders and its my understanding that none of the settings of the web gui will work? Is this still the case? Is thereby way to set up categories and have them complete to different folders? I also read that turning off auto move is wise, does this still apply? Im wondering if i have to choose between deluge (slow but steady) or this (fast but hands on and not automated).

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks  :)

You can set some things from the gui, but some things are defined in you config file, and will therefor be changed upon restart.

I am using automove, and it is working fine 99% of the time

yeah youve nailed it there, deluge is slow and steady, rtorrent is fast and slightly unstable, but ive got more code in now to auto restart stuff, so its pretty good now, i personally made the switch over to rtorrent purely for the improved dl speeds.

so as ZataH correctly stated, the way rutorrent works is that it will allow you to modify settings for rtorrent and the change will take effect, but they wont save, but any setting for rutorrent itself will save, so configuration settings for any of the rutorrent plugins will save correctly. If you want to make changes to some core rtorrent settings then you will need to crank open a copy of notepad++ (or any good editor that supports correct line endings) and open the file /config/rtorrent/config/rtorrent.rc.

oh and just to confirm i have no issues with automove myself, works consistently for me.

Thank you for the response. Ive opened and set the proper paths using MC in terminal. Everything works smoothly. Is there any way to setup categories so I don't have all types of media put into the completed file? If that isn't possible, how can I manually move the files to the correct folders and then point rutorrent  to there for seeding?

Why not just copy the files?

So that is basically telling you the openvpn process is being terminated for some reason and it's auto restarting. Firstly try shutting down the docker container and then restarting, if it's still not starting up correctly then please post the entire supervisord.log file located in /config

Hi,

So, for the record, I've been using your rtorrent image in which I added the tracklabels plugin, for more than a month with around 900 torrents and 3 or 4 trackers. Things are stable, no issue so far.

Maybe you could think about giving it another try?

Cheers

Could it be that your vpn credentials have expired?

Try to login manually from your pc using the OpenVPN config.

I'm getting stuck here. Thoughts?

you sure about that port number?

2017-02-01 12:13:05.425274 [info] VPN_PORT defined as '1198'

looking at the name of your ovpn file i would guess your port is 443 no?:-

[info] VPN config file (ovpn extension) is located at /config/openvpn/AirVPN_Switzerland_UDP-443.ovpn

open up the ovpn file and take a look at the port, its the number defined at the end of the "remote" line, if its not 1198 then change it and try again.

Found out a weird setting done by some of your process.

I've been using it for 3 days and I was wondering why there was almost no upload going on even with all the proper settings.

The issue was in the reported IP to tracker.

The IP reported is the internal ip of the VPN connection and not the real ip that the outside see.

The TUN0 adress is 10.4.55.159.

I can see it's also what the log show:

2017-02-04 19:57:37,316 DEBG 'rtorrent-script' stdout output:

[info] rTorrent listening interface IP 0.0.0.0 and VPN provider IP 10.4.55.159 different, marking for reconfigure

[info] Attempting to start rTorrent...

[info] Removing any rtorrent session lock files left over from the previous run...

But nobody will ever be able to acces that adress, except maybe people on the same VPN server.

The real IP of the server is 109.202.107.10.

As soon as I updated in ruTorrent the reported IP to be the real IP, upload starting going as they were before when rTorrent wasn't in a docker container but with a manual package install and a manual VPN connection.

Just letting you know, not sure if you can do something about it but since the IP get updated by a script I guess you can fix it.

Thanks!

Here's the line in the script I used before that was giving me the real outside ip of the VPN connection:

current_remote_ip=$(curl --connect-timeout "10" -s https://ipinfo.io/ip)

Not sure if that can help or not.

thanks yes, i had something very similar in mind using cli tool "jq" and curl to query https://api.ipify.org/?format=json i will see if i can implement it this week.

Just wanted to say I gave this a test, manually set my IP reported to tracker under settings to the VPN External IP.

I have seen a significant improvement in upload speeds. I just thought it must have been the speeds I was going to be getting via a VPN, but it has jumped 3-4 times per hour since I made the change.

Very good find kas123tt, and I look forward to your fix binhex.

I just set up a new unRAID box wit rtorrentvpn 0.9.6. I can't access the web interface at all. It requires a usename and password that are a complete mystery to me. I never made those. No prompts to make them. Nothing. How do I define those? There's nothing I can see in the template relating to authentication. I'm pulling my hair out a little trying to find the answer. Searching ain't helping.
