March 30, 201610 yr I was reading more about the changes to the 'activation' process in Windows 10.... from what I can tell theres not a great reason to ever activate it. AFAIK you still get the full gamut of updates, windows defender updates all of that... you're just blocked out from using some of the more convenient 'home desktop' features, UI customization some things like that. So for me, I'm running a dual pure steam-stream rig... barely using windows as it is. Is windows basically just free now for non-desktop applications?
March 30, 201610 yr Maybe. But if all people didn't pay for what they used, we'd be stuck on Windows 3.1
March 30, 201610 yr You also get the "windows is not activated" splash in the bottom right of your screen. This layer is above any windows/games/etc you bring up.
March 30, 201610 yr Windows is not free. For a limited time, you can get a free upgrade to Windows 10 on qualifying devices. They have even relaxed the process of activating clean installs if you have a product code from an upgrade (google for process).
March 30, 201610 yr Anyone with a legit copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8 is eligible for a free upgrade to the same edition of Windows 10 until June, after June the upgrade will cost $$.
