unRAID Server Release 6.2.0-beta21 Available

First time using 6.2-beta? please read the Original 6.2-beta Announcement Post first.

IMPORTANT

[*]While every effort has been made to ensure no data loss, THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE.... use at your own risk...

[*]Your server must have access to the Internet to use the unRAID 6.2 beta.

[*]Posts in this thread should be to report bugs and comment on features ONLY.

HOW TO REPORT A BUG

Think you've found a bug or other defect in the beta?  Ask yourself these questions before posting about it here:

[*]Have I successfully tested this bug with all my plugins disabled (booting into safe mode)?

[*]Can I recreate the bug consistently and have I documented the steps to do so?

[*]Have I downloaded my diagnostics from the unRAID webGui after the bug occurred, but before I rebooted the system?

Do not post about a bug unless you can confidently answer "Yes" to all three of those questions.  Once you can, be sure to follow these guidelines, but make sure to post as a reply on this thread, not as a new topic under defect reports (we track bug reports for beta/rc releases independent from the stable release).

Installing and updating the beta

If you are currently running previous 6.2-beta release, clicking 'Check for Updates' on the Plugins page is the preferred way to upgrade.

Alternately, navigate to Plugins/Install Plugin, copy this text into the box and click Install:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/limetech/unRAIDServer-6.2/master/unRAIDServer.plg

You may also Download the release and generate a fresh install.

A note from the developers

More bug fixes.  Also upgraded to bleeding edge Samba release 4.4.0.  Normally we don't like upgrading to the first new non-patch release of a major comonent such as Samba or the linux kernel.  But there are several windows 10 'fixes' in this release, and since we are still in "beta" we decided to go for it.

Nice work, nice changes.  ;D

I would like to suggest we revert to the old way of documenting security issues even in in beta release notes

For instance in 6.1.9 "glibc: version 2.17-11 (SSA:2016-054-02)" whereas beta21 has "php: version 5.6.20" but omits "SSA:2016-092-02".

I agree it is more work but its the only mechanism unRAID has for informing users about security issues so we should not drop it (especially since the 6.2.0 release notes diff to 6.1.9 will be considerable).

Yes, mounting iso files in Windows 10 should work now without overriding the max protocol value.

Can this be turned on for testing? How?

SMB3 Multi-Channel

------------------

Samba 4.4.0 adds *experimental* support for SMB3 Multi-Channel.

Multi-Channel is an SMB3 protocol feature that allows the client

to bind multiple transport connections into one authenticated

SMB session. This allows for increased fault tolerance and

throughput. The client chooses transport connections as reported

by the server and also chooses over which of the bound transport

connections to send traffic. I/O operations for a given file

handle can span multiple network connections this way.

An SMB multi-channel session will be valid as long as at least

one of its channels are up.

In Samba, multi-channel can be enabled by setting the new

smb.conf option "server multi channel support" to "yes".

It is disabled by default.

Samba has to report interface speeds and some capabilities to

the client. On Linux, Samba can auto-detect the speed of an

interface. But to support other platforms, and in order to be

able to manually override the detected values, the "interfaces"

smb.conf option has been given an extended syntax, by which an

interface specification can additionally carry speed and

capability information. The extended syntax looks like this

for setting the speed to 1 gigabit per second:

    interfaces = 192.168.1.42;speed=1000000000

This extension should be used with care and are mainly intended

for testing. See the smb.conf manual page for details.

CAVEAT: While this should be working without problems mostly,

there are still corner cases in the treatment of channel failures

that may result in DATA CORRUPTION when these race conditions hit.

It is hence

NOT RECOMMENDED TO USE MULTI-CHANNEL IN PRODUCTION

at this stage. This situation can be expected to improve during

the life-time of the 4.4 release. Feed-back from test-setups is

highly welcome.

On the Settings --> SMB --> SMB Extras page you can add in:

server multi channel support = yes

Hit 'Apply'.  You may also then need to stop and start the array for that setting to take effect.

Note: We haven't even experimented with multi channel support yet, they warn of data corruption in certain rare race conditions.

Yes, mounting iso files in Windows 10 should work now without overriding the max protocol value.

In addition, VHD files also should be able to be created and mounted over SMB.

And on top of that, some users may have had issues trying to use the native Windows backup utility (from 7, 8.x, and 10).  This also seems to be resolved with this release, but please report back if you use this feature and have issues.

Screen shot of said VM Manager?

Also, you will miss ESXi if you ever need to configure VLANs ::).

Just installed this release -- my first unRAID beta.  It's working very well.  Thanks!

I did have some trouble with getting VMs to work as the VM tool seemed to lose its direction to the libvert storage location.  It took me a while to figure out what that was and where it should go :) and all is working fine now.

Also, I went to all of my Win10 machines and enabled SMB3 and it works well with unRAID now.

Out of curiosity, has anyone upgraded to Beta21 from 6.1.9 ?  Just curious how the process went for you, trying to get a feel if some of the subsequent betas have smoothed this over or not.

Thanks

Does the Samba release 4.4.0 fix the error in windows 10 not mounting iso files, and we no longer need to add max protocol = SMB2_02

Aaaaah that's why my origin vhd gaming vm setup failed recently!

Out of curiosity, has anyone upgraded to Beta21 from 6.1.9 ?  Just curious how the process went for you, trying to get a feel if some of the subsequent betas have smoothed this over or not.

Thanks.

I'm yet to try - Going to try tonight if I get the chance... I've tried updating my unRAID server (spec in my sig) to beta, 18, 19 and 20 with no success :P Hopefully beta21 will work out :D

(I made a post in a previous thread, errors when I update - keeps scanning for label = UNRAID and gives up)

I am thinking about upgrading to beta 21, I am running plex, Emby, SabNZB, Sickbeard, couchpotato and drop box as dockers, as well as a few plugins, but no VM's. Will my dockers work ok after the upgrade? I know its a risk I have to take if I am going to do it.

I use most of the dynamix plugins, 2 VM and 12 Dockers. Biggest pain in the *** was having to update each docker due to the docker API update

Upgraded my backup server from 6.1.9 to 6.2.0-beta21.  Upgrade process was easy.

Only thing I've noticed so far is the color coding in the syslog doesn't appear to be working (see no colors).
