Cache Disk Drive

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am wondering what size and drive to use for the cache, weather it needs to be large or small etc?

Thanks

Harry

I am using a 256GB-SSD - perfect for me. It depends, what you do with your Cache.

In my case, i use it only for my Plex-Database and transfering Movies/TV-shows from my PC to the unraid-NAS.

Would a 480 gb ssd be fine?

Sure - why not?  ;)

Well I want to save money ish so is that a bit overkill, can i go with a 240 gb? I want to use the server for backups and running servers off it ie game and ts servers

Bit of a change of topic can you use the parity drive for backup ie backing up a PC to it?

No - there is no data stored on the parity disk.  I think you misunderstand how parity works - you should read the wiki articles in the online documentation on this.    All the parity disk has is the information to rebuild any sectors on a failed disk (in conjunction with all the other data disks), it has no concept of what is stored in those sectors.

You should run the servers from the cache, and backups on the array.

A 120GB SSD is enough for teamspeak and some servers, but I would still go with 250GB since it is not so expensive.

Will 3 2TB HDD, 1 3TB HDD (parity) and 1 240 gb ssd be enough or overkill?

For cache it is enough. You need to figure out how many disk you need on the array yourself. Depends on what you store there.

If you run out of space, just pop in a new disk and add it to the array :)

Well the annoying thing is my case only has 4 slots...

You really need to read section 1 of the following:

    http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/UnRAID_Manual_6#What_is_unRAID.3F

While the folks here can give a feel for what has worked for them, you need to get a better handle on what your needs are!  The cache drive needs to be large enough to hold everything that you plan on uploading in a 24-hour period. The storage part of the array is for long-term permanent storage of data and needs to be sized based on how much stuff you plan to store.  The array can be easily expanded by adding either (1) adding more HDs or (2) replacing existing HD's with larger HD's. (Most of us have found that storage needs have increased far beyond what we initally thought we would ever need!)

Well, you can use that case until it is not longer larger  enough and then get a new one.  By the way, most ssd's can be mounted in an out of the way spot in the case (double face tape is one way to secure) and not use up a slot.  Something to look at doing...

I think I'll stick either the current case I can upgrade later if I want

One of the best things about unraid is that it's hardware agnostic. YOu want to switch out your motherboard... that's no problem. You want to change CPUs that's AOK. The only thing that is hard to change is the USB with the license on it... and that's not that hard to change, it just involves LimeTech sending you a new key (so you can't do it on your own...)

That is even quite easy in most cases.  For instructions on how to replace the Flash Drive, see here:
