April 13, 201610 yr So about a year ago I ordered a batch of WD Red 3GB drives. The first 2 have been used in Unraid and are stable, I am currently attempting to preclear the 3rd and 4th drive. One drive precleared no problem, one of the drives has crashed my Unriad 4x now when attempting to Preclear. Preclear runs for about 30min-1hr then the whole Unraid system crashes. I've attached a screen shot of the console view when the crash occurs. Every time UnRaid has to be rebooted and it runs a Parity Check automatically every time I restart it. I will also attach a diagnostics... The drive in questions is : WD-WCC4N7ZFR14R My setup. I am running on SuperMicro X7SB4, which has ESXi. Unraid is a VM in ESXi and I am using hardware passthrough to pass through a AOC-SAT2-MV8 Controller Card I have tried to preclear the drive in 2 different connections to Controller Card in attempt to rule out a loose connection / wiring problem. dwtower-diagnostics-20160413-1327.zip
April 13, 201610 yr Just a wild guess, there may be a bug in sata_mv, especially being virtualized. Marvell and virtualization have been a notoriously problematic combination. Can you Preclear on any other port, off that controller? I also see Port Multiplier error handlers in there, any chance you have a Port Multiplier adapter connected too?
April 13, 201610 yr Author thanks for the reply... I don't have a port multiplier that I know of... I was able to successfully preclear another drive a few days ago (WCC4N5HED88E), it was also connected through that controller.
April 16, 201610 yr There are some hard drive errors that will crash or hang unRAID, you should always take it into account when deciding to write to your array during a preclear.
