128GB Ram, should I do ESXi?

Hey all!

 

I am trying to decide between barebones unRaid and ESXi on a 128g ram build with dual 6 core opteron 2425 HE processors. This is in one of the ubiquitous TAMsolutions Supermicro 24 Bay Chassis SATA SAS846TQ Server with the H8DME-2 2.01A MOBOs.

 

I read that the ubu 12.04 allows for the passthru without issue, but some report issues with other distros

    FOLLOWUP - So I went with building the unRaid on top of the metal and indeed the H8DME-2 mobo does not allow for passthru. It looks as if any of the MCP55 motherboards will stop passthru as Nvidia and AMD failed to resolve several issues with IOMMU and hence passthru while reported does not function.

     

    I have a new mobo being dropped tomorrow that is a H8DI3+-F  with the updated AMD SR5690 + SP5100 Chipset which will allow passthru.
