I have been struggling to get good speeds from my unRAID server and have some comparisons from another machine in the same network.  I have just replaced all the cables to CAT6, Replaced the Switch (I have tried 3, DLINK, NETGEAR & TPLINK)

 

From my Desktop machine to my G1610T 8GBRAM unRAID server with Western Digital/Samsung/Seagate 2TB Disks I get a transfer rate of 32MBPS after the write to memory boost of 80MBPS but if I write to my Windows 7 HP G1610T Gen8 Microserver 8GB (Same CPU, Same RAM & Same Disks) I get a constant 95MBPS? what can be slowing the unRAID server down so much? I have been struggling with this for quite some time and cannot currently see the point to having an unRAID server when Windows 7 seems to be so much faster? I understand there are hardware differences so do I need to change my network card in the unRAID server?

 

Please understand this is not a dig at unRAID because despite all this I love it, I just need faster transfer speeds...

Not really enough info, post diagnostics.

 

I would assume that you have a parity protected array with at least two disks and that the bottleneck when writing is due to parity generation rather than the network. Turbo Write or a cache drive could be worth checking out.

 

If you transfer FROM the unRAID server to another machine, do you get decent speeds?

I will work out how to post diagnostics but after reading it would seem that a cache drive would be the answer (I have a spare 120GB SSD lying around) its a bit crap that I have to upgrade my licence though just to get acceptable speeds...

you will only need to upgrade your license if adding the cache drive takes you over the attached devices limit for your current license.

slow speed when written to unRaid is normal as it design to be like this

is will equal to 1/4 speed of hard disk

 

you can improve by adding cache, then speed can reach to 95Mbps

Copy file from your desktop to unRaid cache with full of bandwidth, after that unRaid will move from cache to data disk with slow speed.

Have not tried Turbo Write as I do not think it is the path I want to go down... I am getting 90mbps reading from the unRAID server... This looks as if everything is working ok (My Network) it is just down to the parity write... I will have to consider upgrading my licence for the cache disk I suppose 

Turbo Write (or in 6.2.0 beta 18+ language: "reconstruct write") helps a lot.

Turbo Write gives 60% improve in speed (caveat: I'm testing unRAID in VMWare Workstation so the disks are all virtual but each disk is located on a separate 7200rpm physical HDD so performance should be representative of real life).

 

Cache drive, in my opinion, would only work on an established array (i.e. most data is already there, so daily activity is just the "delta"). When you just started, it's likely you will need a massive amount of overnight copying. So 60% diff for me is a 5-hour difference.

 

And it's not like the cache will stop the slowness. It just delay the slowness into the night.

I bit the bullet & bought the upgrade and now getting solid 90mbps+ constant write speed which is great, the issue I have now is the verification speed using Teracopy from Windows as it takes approx 3-4 minutes to verify 2GB!

 

Anyone else experience this? is Teracopy a problem? is there an alternative file copy program that verifies?

Just an update,

 

I have tested fastcopy as recommended by many sites & I get 105mbps when writing to the cache disk which is great but also with this copier I am only getting 1mbps? I notice that when writing the disk activity light is almost on all the time as expected but when verifying I barely see a flicker? something is bottlenecking up! any ideas? I have attached the diagnostics file

Ok, so I am able to write to server at over 100mbps but can only read at 9-11mbps? I have changed the cache disk, also tried an IBM server Gigabit LAN card (slight improvement to 13mbps) any ideas as to why my read speed is so slow?

Probably network related, try different cable/switch.
