April 21, 201610 yr Hello, What is your budget? - $2000 NZD How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need? - 8+ Is expandability important to you? If so, what's your long term goal? - Not so much, not really worried. Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons (see here)? - Plex (3 co-current transcodes), CouchPotato, Sonarr, Rutorrent. Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives? - Was thinking of using a SSD for the VM's and the rest it doesn't matter too much. Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build? - Id be looking to buy a whole system. If you already have parts in mind, please oh pretty please post links to them so that we don't have to look them up. Here is the list i was thinking of using... http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/8kJnsY EDIT: Plan has changed - Im going to use my current PC as my unraid server and build another pc for myself. So the pc that im going to use for unraid consists of.... I7 3930k (how well does unraid handle utilizing multiple cores??) 12GB ram ( one faulty mb slot :'( ) gigabyte LGA2011 UD3 MB 120gb SSD (probably wont be used as i read unraid is booted off usb?) Many thanks guys, thought i'd ask here due to you all being the unraid experts! ~ Ayrton
April 23, 201610 yr unRAID uses multiple cores very well (as expected), it just depends on what you use it for. You should use the 120GB SSD for dockers and VM's, or cache for your shares. Yes unRAID is booting from usb.
