April 23, 201610 yr I am on version 6.1.4. All my shares have SMB Security Settings of "export" = yes and "security" = public. The windows 7 computer I'm on, which used to find the unraid server all the time even after upgrade to version 6.1.4, no longer finds the unraid server. So, if I'm in windows explorer, I have to manually type in \\servername. This happens on my wife's computer, too. I can't find the server to map a drive, and some programs no longer find the server at all. (In fact, I'm trying to convert FLAC files to iTunes format and the program I'm using can't find the server, so I can't convert anything.) The only program that works now is Windows Explorer, and that only when I type in \\servername. (I can access the server easily through Firefox, too.) Are there other settings that perhaps got changed? Any other debugging I can do? Thank you.
April 23, 201610 yr Author I should say this happens both on my computer and my wife's computer (both windows 7), and never happened before on either of them until about a month ago or so (working on version 6.1.4 for a while), so I'm thinking it's an unraid (or networking) issue. Although, I've not changed anything in the network, either, although I did physically move things. I made no other changes, though. Could moving the server and reconnecting it somehow do something?

And leaving your server on 24-7 will also mitigate the problem. The issue often occurs because the the SMB began back with Windows 3.1 (Windows for Workgroups) in the 1990's and the 386 20Mhz processor was the state of the art. The time between polling for the Local Master was set to in the minute range (15 is the number I seem to recall) and if the Local Master went off-line or a computer that was higher in the pecking order demanded an election, a new one had to be elected, and then it took time for the entire network to become aware of the change. IF you want to know which computer is the local master, go to this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=36543.0 and install the Local Master plugin. It will tell which computer is currently the local master. After the install, you go to 'Settings' >> 'SMB' >> 'Workgroup Settings' to see which computer is the current master.
April 25, 201610 yr Author Great, thank you. I'll try this and report back. I do leave the server on 24/7. In fact (knock on wood), this server -- other than for upgrades or to put in bigger drives -- has been on 24/7/365/many years (can't remember how many).
April 25, 201610 yr Author This worked! I installed the local master plugin, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'll go to that page to post. Thank you.
