April 26, 201610 yr Hi Everyone, I know this is not your typical question but I just want to put it out there to the Linux community and the markers of Unraid and see how/if I can use Unraid in my particular scenario. For security and privacy/data protection all my drives and raid arrays are encrypted. I use a double luks Encryption Layout composed of AES-XTS SHA 512 layer 1 and Twofish-XTS SHA512 layer2. My Raid is managed by a dedicated Raid card so I would never use the Unraid Raid capability but I do really like the VM support as it's extremely simple to run. I could also do Ovirt but that will require me to setup a much more advanced storage then I want. The layout for the encryption is this Partition => L1 - AES-XTS Mapper => L2 - Twofish-XTS Mapper => into a PV/VG/LV Getting unraid to decrypt my storage wasn't all that difficult just had to recompile the kernel. But I was unable to Get Unraid to detect the LV even after decryption. I have to say seeing Slackware again brought me back to the very first Linux OS'es I worked on and learned my craft 15+ years ago. In the ideal scenario Unraid would use the LV behind my 2 layers of encryption and I will require to manually "unlock" after reboot. In this scenario all my data will be protected at rest. Any ideas would be welcomed! Bogdan
May 19, 201610 yr Are you keeping your encrypted drives outside the array and just using unraid for the interface? Just curious it is possible to have an differently formatted drive in the array.
May 19, 201610 yr He's not using the unRAID array, he's using it as a platform. Sorry, out of my league here. Could you pass the controller and drives through to your VM, and use the tools and OS you are used to in that VM?
