Adding more ram

Featured Replies

Hi,

My unraid system currently has 8gb ram. I want to add another 8gb.

I have two slots free on my motherboard.

I can't buy the same ram as it has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

What I wanted to know is with the ram been non ECC can I add more ram to the existing ram even though it's not the same brand?

What are the essential things to be careful of? My current ram is 1.65v so I'd be better off with ram using the same voltage I think I'm correct In saying?

timings of the old ram is quite tight at 7.8.7.24 (it's mushkin redline ddr3)  so would it be safe to just loosen the timing of the old ram to match that of the new?

Can anyone please give an idea on how best to buy ram that would work?

thanks

I have mixed different brands and speeds in systems in a pinch, and they have worked fine.  I was told back in the day to make sure that at least each channel has the same ram, so same ram in same color slot.  Speed would be adjusted to the slower sticks.  This might have change over the years, so I might be wrong.

Personally don't see much of a difference running non ECC slower memory vs the faster memory.  I would just buy all new cheaper memory and have them all the same and throw the higher speed memory in a system that can use it.
