Windows 10 vm takes 10 mintues to reboot

Featured Replies

Sorry for the long post but im new to unraid and have been trying to get this to work with no luck.

I am attempting to passthrough this sata contoller SYBA SI-PEX40064( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124064&FM=1 ). It uses the marvell 88SE9215 Chipset and for whatever reason when i restart my windows 10 vm it takes 10 mintues to restart. it will hang on a black screen before finally logging into windows. im also passing through a dimond 5450 gpu card and a usb3 controller card. If i do not passthrough the sata controller card everything will work perfect including rebooting the vm.

Now, my goal was to passthrough the entire sata controller card with 2hdds attached to it and a dvd rom drive.

when i passthrough entire contoller everything works.. file transfers between hdds on the card are good and i can burn dvds. the only problem is rebooting the vm.

now if i dont passthrough the controller and edit the xml file using '/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3500312CS_9VVERKB1'  to pass through both hdds it works but file transfers between the two drives drop to 0bytes several times throughout the transfer process.. then once the transfer is done windows will lock up for a couple seconds.

when i pass through the dvd rom by editing the vms xml file i can get it to work but when i burn a dvd or cd it freezes unraid completely.

do u think maybe moving the hdds and dvdrom i want to passthrough to the onboard sata contoller and editing the xml file i would see better results with file transfers between the 2 drives and be able to burn dvds?

any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried passing through scsi bus instead?

See here and here.

To see which of you drive is on which SCSI bus, use console command

lsscsi

I had a lot of problems trying to passthrough SATA controller so I gave the scsi bus a try and it seems to work for me.

yes, i have tried that with some success.. I was able to passthrough the scsi bus but i couldnt burn anything to disk.. using imgburn it would stop at syncronizing cache and completly lock up unraid.. had to do a hard reboot. if i would move the dvdrom off the syba sata card and place it on the motherboard sata controller i could pass through and burn dvds normally using the scsi bus passthrough method u had mentioned..

For what its worth, no matter how i configured the hdds, whether it be on the syba sata contoller or the motherboard sata controller when i passed them through using /dev/disk/by-id/"my hdd id number" and trying all types virtio, sata, ide the transfer between the two hdds kept dropping to 0bytes several times throughout the transfer process.

Ultimately, i got it to work by passing through one of the onboard sata contollers which has 4 sata ports on it. So i used the syba sata card to house 4 hdds that are used in my unraid storage pool instead of passing the syba card through to my vm.. works perfectly doing it this way. havent check speeds while doing a parity check being that 4 drives are connected to pcie x2 card but we will see how that goes later on.. worst case i can buy a SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 which runs off a x8 slot..

thanks for the help.
