PLEX Update just caused it to implode?

Featured Replies

I can't remember exactly which version of PLEX I installed thus why I'm posting here.  I just did a PLEX update, which I've done plenty of times before without any issues.  The PLEX update said it completed successfully, but when I went to the webgui of unRaid it was gone?  I looked a number of times and sure enough it just disappeared.  I did a reboot of the server and it still isn't listed in the wegui with all the other dockers.  I went to see if the folders and files still existed on the cache drive and sure enough they all still seem to be there.  Anyone ever seen this before?  Any thoughts on how to resolve it?  I can't really elegantly even uninstall it from the container, because again, it isn't even listed in the webgui.  I could just delete the plexmediaserver folders and files in its entirety and re-install another version, but the database would need to be rebuilt.  That isn't the end of the world, but I'm not sure if it is the best approach.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to.  All my plug-ins are up to date.  I rebooted the server just to be sure.  For whatever reason the Plex server app is just gone as far as unraid is mostly concerned, but the files for it still seem to be on the cache drive.

Re-add it either through CA's previous apps or add container (my* templates) and post the screen shot after its finished downloading (it'll show the command used to start the app)

Thanks. I think I follow. I wasn't sure what you meant by "CA's previous apps" but I did click on "add container" and that displayed the template "my-PlexMediaServer" which does appear to be the template I used some time ago. I must have used "limetech"'s version of this docker. You are saying I should go ahead and click on CREATE from this screen (see screenshot)... correct?

Yeah that's correct.  CA if you have it installed has a better GUI for those my templates (god forbid that dockerMan actually figure out how to sort the list)

Thanks a ton Squid!  That seems to have done it and at least for the moment everything seems to be operating normally. Thanks again!

When you mentioned updating plex, did you update it within the plex application? That is usually not the recommended way to update dockers. Don't know if that might have caused it to "implode" or not.

Many of the dockers here autoupdate the application when you restart the docker. Not sure about the limetech plex docker. I think most people have gone away from that one to linuxserver.io plex docker.

No, I've never updated from within the Plex application. It has always been from unraid's GUI. However, what I have done is perform the update without stopping Plex.  I've pretty much always done it this way, but it might have been that a client was transcoding while the update was attempting to take place. Do you think that could have been the culprit? I just always thought  it was safe to update while Plex was running because the option was always available within the unraid GUI.

Is the auto update only if the Dev had a new build happen in DockerHub?

If an app inside the container gets a new version does the container update that app on a container restart, or does the Dev need to get DockerHub to build a new version?

What is the reason most people do not use the Limetech version of Plex?

Probably support.

Both lsio and binhex actively support here whereas lt is more behind the scenes support on the containers.

That and the snowball effect.  The more people run lsio or binhex the more it's going to be recommended over lt if there is an issue

Depends on what the docker author has it do. LSIO plex checks for new version and downloads it each time it is restarted.
