Moving Plex to a new Machine

Featured Replies

So I have decided to move plex from my N40L (Machine 1)

Version 5.0.5

CPU: AMD Turion(tm) II Neo N40L Dual-Core @ 1.5 GHz
Cache: 256 kB, 2048 kB
Memory: 8192 MB (max. 8 GB)
Network: eth0: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex
Connections: One

to a faster Machine 2

Memory: 4096 MB (max. installable capacity 32 GB)
Network: bond0: fault-tolerance (active-backup)
eth0: 10Mb/s - Half Duplex
eth1: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex

Machine 1 will now act purely as data storage, going to remove all plugins and have already mapped the shares to Machine 2 using "unassigned devices plugin"

    Couple of questions

  1. Should I upgrade Machine 1 to new version of unRAID?
  2. Is there an easy way to back up the plex database on Machine 1 and import it to Plex on Machine 2?

  • My motherboard only supports 16gb according to manufacture but unRAID saying it can support 32gb, should I risk buying 32gb?

[*]Machine 2 has no parity or cache, just a single 120gb SSD, is this risky even though I will be using plugins and dockers?

I did try to zip the app data folder and extract it but when I started up plex on Machine 2 the library and shares were still missing so have manually rebuilt it and all recently added is in wrong order.

Any help and feedback would be appreciated, might look into openvpn docker once I sort this out. But for now transferring Plex is main objective.

Are you using the same plugin or docker you were using on machine one for Plex on machine 2?

Did you pass it the exact same configuration?

My understanding is that if the /Plex Media Server/ is moved properly Plex will have no problems.

So two things could be messing this up. 1) The directory tree isn't correct and it's not finding /Plex Media Server/ because the configuration is slightly off.

2) The permissions aren't the same and you aren't running it under the same user (making it so even if the files are in the right place Plex can't read them) so you might need to change the permissions to be readable by Plex.

Edit: Plex has a guide to this as well. Depending on how this was installed your mileage my vary on what exactly you have to do.

On my old machine I was using 5.0.5 and the plugin was direct from plex site, now moved to docker and using linux.io

I think im just going to stick to rebuilding movie library today and will get round to tv shows another way.

I did use 7zip to create a .tar and extracted it to the right location. It partially worked because the settings were all correct but library wasn't there.

It sounds like you are moving plex to a new server but leaving the media itself on the old server. Unless you know of some way to edit the plex database to tell it the media is in a different location then I don't see how it will find it.

I was able to do something similar to this when I moved my wife's iTunes media from PC to unRAID and moved my own mediamonkey media from PC to unRAID, basically by editing the database each application kept. I have no idea if this can be done with plex. Maybe search on the plex forums.

Hi -

For machine 2, 4GB is probably fine to run unRAID 6 and Plex, and 8GB would be great.  16GB or 32GB is quite generous and over-the-top generous, in turn.

Ideally you'd upgrade machine 1 to unRAID 6 but I'd be careful about it - the AMD Turion II N40L Dual Core is a somewhat low end chip.  You'll probably be fine, but when you migrate I'd see how it does with a parity check and be prepared to go back if it can't handle it.

Based on the directions on Plex's website this can be done...

Edit Your Libraries

In order to update the content location for your media, you'll need to Edit a library and then add the appropriate folder for where your content is located on the destination system. Leave the existing/previous folder location in there for now.

You'll need to do this for each of your libraries, but you should probably complete the process for one at a time.

Im pretty sure the plex plugin from Plex's website uses "Plex" as the user in linux, I don't know that linuxserver.io does. I'm not an expert on docker so I don't really know.

The hubpage for the docker seems to imply that it's running as "plex" instead of "Plex"

Thanks for all the replies, I did try move the database but didnt work, the movie database has repopulated now. Got a few mismatches to fix but its looking ok.

I decided to keep all the data as in movies files etc on Machine 1 simply because it has 5 drives in and I will soon replace the cache with an SSD.

Machine 2 has virtually no space for any other drives but has a BD drive which I can to rip directly then move to Machine 1.

Might sort my TV shows out now.

Then try setup openvpn
