How to rollback from 6.1.9 to 5.0.5?

Featured Replies

ok, i upgraded to 6.1.9 and it's a really bad version for me.  It just doesnt work, works a bit, and then it stops.  Can't even stop the array, i have to shut it down improperly every time, I've done this about 10 times so far.

So I want to rollback to the previous version i had, 5.0.5.  I have a full backup of my USB, of 5.0.5.  What is the procedure to revert back?

by the way, I haven't formatted any hard drives yet to the new format, as I was expecting to roll back.

Thanks

First make a full copy of the 6.1.9 setup.  (I always honor the gods of Murphy's Law!)  :o

Then format the Flash Drive. Copy back your save 5.05 version.  Run make_bootable (as Administrator, if required).  Plugin the Flash Drive and boot.

Did you remove all 5.0.5 plugins and any packages in /boot/extra before upgrading?  5.0.5 plugins are not compatible with 6.1.

Did you use the upgrade WIKI to go from ver 5 to ver 6?  That document now has addressed the issues that have been identified to date and tells you now to get around them.  You can find it here:

The reason I point this out is that virtually everyone has been successful in upgrading.  Most had no issues, a few had one or two issues, and a very, very few had a lot of problems along the way.

I would suggest you try going to an older 6.1.X version first.  After much examination over the past few days, I determined many of the problems I've been having (network slowdowns mainly, but a couple of lockups, and NIC problems) are caused by 6.1.9,  I rolled back to 6.1.6 and my network is back to full speed.

I still have a minor NIC problem with RX dropped packets (on an Intel no less).  On 6.1.9 I was getting massive drops with my Realtek adapter.  I installed this Intel adapter and had zero Rx Drops over a three day period.  Rolled back to 6.1.6, and now the Intel NIC is getting RX drops (few hundred a day, vs few hundred thousand per day on Realtek/6.1.9).

I do miss 5.06.  ultra stable, great network transfer speeds and zero Rx Drops out of that older kernel.  But I've already converted to XFS, so I'm sort of stuck in 6.1.X now.

FWIW, my experience of Intel vs Realtek gigabit NICs is that the overall throughput with Intel can be higher but with many more dropped packets. The quality of the Intel driver has always been much better than Realtek and I seem to recall that in one of the early 6.1.x unRAID releases the Realtek driver was changed (and possibly reverted?). It might be worth looking back through the release notes. I don't think a small percentage of dropped packets is any great cause for concern.

Well, not all Realtek is the same, and not all Intel is the same.  The Intel CT is apparently notorious for problems on linux systems, and it was almost as bad as my onboard Realtek.  The Intel 1000 GT appears way better.

However, not all Realtek's are equal.  There was a driver update for the 8111, 8168, etc., like you mentioned.  But my Realtek has to use the forcedeth driver to work (drops like  a mofo, a million a day or more).  I have a second unRAID, same processor, ram, but different mobo.  It has a Realtek 8168.  It's rock steady.  It ran over 100 days without a single drop and it chews up anything I throw at it.
