KB36
Hi guys. I need your help. My setup has served me perfectly for the last 3 years. But i'm running out of space. Need to find a SATA expansion Card and a drive cage. There is 3 x 5,25" slots in the top of the cabinet, with room for 4 x 3,5" So i need tips on what to get. The mobo has the following slots. - 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (PCIE1: x16 mode) - 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot (PCIE2: x4 mode) - 2 x PCI slots - Supports AMD Quad CrossFireX™ and CrossFireX™ *PCIe Gen3 is supported on 3rd Generation of Intel® Core™ i5 and Core™ i7 CPUs. Here i need a SATA expansion card with 4 SATA connectors. Need tips on what to get. I live in Denmark, so i would prefer hardware that's easy to get in europe. The setup is as follows. OS at time of building: 5.0-rc16c CPU: Celeron G1610 2 MB (BX80637G1610) MOBO: Asrock B75 Pro3-M (firmware 1.80) RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 2 x 4 GB 1600mhz (KVR16N11S8K2/8) Case: Enermax Ostrog GT (ECA3280A-B-F) Drive Cage: None at the moment. Wishlist (in 2013 were) Chieftec SNT-3141 SATA PSU: Corsair CX600 V2 SATA Expansion Card: None at the moment. Wishlist (in 2013 were) Adaptec RAID 1430SA USB key: Sandisk Cruzer Fit 4GB (pro licence ordered 18. august 2013) Fans: The 3 fans that were included in the case. Sata power splitter: Silverstone CP06 Sata data: sata 600 0,5m USB cable: Deltaco 2-11B (not gonna use since i've changed the USB key Primary Use: Media (movies, tvseries) Likes: The drives haven't been over 32°C + The 8 drives have been easy to mount (thanks to the sideways drivebay) + Cool and quiet Dislikes: Non at the moment Add Ons Used: preclear, unMenu, Future Plans: Add more data drives. JorgeB
Adaptec 1430SA is a good option for 4 extra ports, they are cheap on ebay and it works for sure on your board, as I have the same model. Quote Link to comment
KB36
I've looked at ICY BOX IB-544SSK 4Bay Backplane as a drive cage. Are there any brands that do it better for less? Quote Link to comment
willgreen
I use 3 of the Akasa AK-HDA-07 but I paid about £16 each for them, I am going to upgrade the fan to something better. Amazon sell them but they are not cheap at the moment. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXPANSION-KIT-4X-3-5-HDDS-3X-5-25-BAYS-Part-Number-AK-HDA-07-/271927030390?hash=item3f501d3276:g:r~AAAOxyx-BScA2m Quote Link to comment
KB36
Is the raid thingy a problem, or is it plug and play? My unraid box hasn't given me any problems, so i'm still a newbie. (No learning by doing) So the easier it is, the better. The Adaptec 1430SA was on my wishlist back in 2013 when i build the box. If there is a newer version, then i'm open for tips. JorgeB
1430SA is not the newest controller, but still works very well and IMO one the best options for a 4 port controller. A newer option is a Marvell 9230 based controller, e.g., SYBA SI-PEX40057, but for HDD use with unRAID performance will be very similar, both are capable of 200MB/s with 4 disks, and this one can have issues with virtualization. In regards to pricing, the link you pmed me looks good, I consider 20/25€ a fair price. One thing I forgot to mention earlier, if you buy the 1430SA make sure it's running the latest firmware, needed for >2TB support. Quote Link to comment
