6.2 beta 21 AMD CPU KVM bug?

Recommended Posts

Coming from 6.1 stable, my VM stopped working.

Now I cannot seem to get a Windows VM running. My old Ubuntu VM seems to work fine though.

This is the log:

I am having the same problem. I am new to unRAID and built an AMD system and enabled all the AMD virtualization settings I could find in the BIOS. As soon as I start the VM, my unRAID server becomes unstable and unresponsive. I can't even do a clean shut down from the powerdown plugin via SSH. I am unable to shut down the VM - even commands from CLI hang. The only thing I could do was do a hard reset.

I tried a Windows 10 and Ubuntu 14.04 VM. I thought maybe I had bad settings on the VMs - I tried Host Passthrough and Emulated CPU Modes, I tried different Machine type settings - nothing has worked so far.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!

Have you tried starting it without pass through? I have and 8350 with a gigabyte 970 mb passing through just fine. Also just to be clear if using an fx line chip you need another video card in one of the slots for passthrough. I use a cheap and card and have my 970 in a x16 8x slot. I don't have experience with the Apu chips but assigning the onboard video in bios for onboard by default could help. With one working and one not triple check your passthrough settings. Both can't run off the same card at the same time. I did have a "bug" with my cheap card passing as an option on an earlier version. Best practice is to not run the VM off the same card feeding the unraid display.

Coming from 6.1 stable, my VM stopped working.

Now I cannot seem to get a Windows VM running. My old Ubuntu VM seems to work fine though.

This is the log:

Did anyone figure this out?  I am having the same issue with rc4.

I went ahead and updated to the newest 6.2.  That line breaks the Windows VM:

Execution error

When I change the number of cores back to one, all the VMs all boot up.  OpenELEC and Ubuntu logs show the following:

I would like to recommend to all who have posted here, or may post in the future, to please include in your post (modify it if needed) what CPU you are using and the OS of the VM.  One suggestion so far is that this affects Windows 10 VM's on an AMD CPU, FX series.  Please also include the errors you saw, and whether they are the same as others here, so it can be determined if it is the same issue, or there are multiple issues.  Please also try Eric's (eschultz) suggestions, report anything useful you discover.

I just upgraded to UnRAID 6.2 Stable from 6.1.X. I have an AMD FX-8320E running on a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5-R5 (?), I believe.  I use an old ATI Rage XL PCI as my boot GPU.

My 2012 R2 VM did not incur the errors everyone else is having, it only uses VNC.. but.

My Windows 10 VM with GPU passthrough on an nVidia GPU had it.  I deployed a LibreELEC VM from the new templates with an ATI Radeon 65XX GPU passthrough.  Both had the issues listed.  Both seem to be RESOLVED using Eric's suggestions.  I see why both are required.. makes sense.  Thank you Eric.

Windows 7 - will not boot at all past splash screen, even when trying to install.  It does seem to be running though as it is consuming a good chunk of memory.

Windows 10 same as above. I installed and it ran fine with cpumode=host-passthrough, then quit after a day with the same errors as above.  It is booting with the xml change Eric suggested, but I feel like performance is taking a hit.  I don;t get why OpenELEC will work sometimes and then generate the earlier mentioned Execution Error.

Try the following flags for both Opteron_G3 / Opteron_G4 / Opteron_G5

Im not sure what flag level your FX processor is at but I would guess G4 or G5. I think you are hobbling the cpu with a restrictive level maybe. That would force certain flags to not be utilized (poor performance-locks)

  <cpu mode='custom' match='exact'>

    <model fallback='allow'>Opteron_G3</model>

  </cpu>

and then at the end

    <qemu:arg value='-cpu'/>

    <qemu:arg value='Opteron_G3,vendor=AuthenticAMD'/>

I am suffering the AMD pain game also here with some Opteron 2425's that are level G3. The implication being no ssse3 and sse4.1 (which certain operating systems (seem to)need to function properly) as well as the issues that come with the bios emulator qemu issues. It is hard to find the KVM/qemu forums that would even deal with this stuff.

Honestly, I wont go AMD again. I got these with this machine but they have been a constant problem.

Zen shouldn't be a problem, when it comes out. You're talking about a really old part by technology standards.

In my opinion, the last great AMD processor was the first Athlon64. Then Intel produced the Core series, starting with the Core Duo and Core Quad, and moving on to Core 2, and various generations of i3/i5/i7. All of which have had higher prices, but also higher performance per watt than AMD's competing offerings. It was a no brainer if you were building a server which would be running 24/7.

With Zen coming out Soon™, the game may finally change again to favor AMD. If you can wait a few more months, to early 2017, you may change your mind on dropping AMD.

I'm undecided, but I tend to go with whatever flies by my whim at the moment, and this new tech looks like it could be a game changer. Supporting everything up to AVX2, likely all models will have IOMMU, and it's possible there will be some server models with ECC UDIMM support.

Has anyone gotten this working? I'm still a no-go :(

likewise - I'm on an older chip (AMD 245) but i can't even MAKE a vm at this point, i get the error as soon as i hit create (OpenELEC, ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, etc)
