Advice about my config

Featured Replies

Dear Unraid community,

After playing around with unraid is still have some issues. The main of which is that the config of plugins are NOT persistent.

My config as of now is as follows:

Array:

Parity - 2TB

Disk 1 - 2 TB

Disk 2 - 1 TB

Disk 3 - 1 TB

Boot:

Flash_Voyager - 8 GB

Unassigned devices:

SDB - USB - 500 GB

SDC - SATA - 500 GB

SDF - SATA - 500 GB

What I want from this unraid server:

1. Running Transmission, NZBget, Couchpotato, Sonarr, Plex, BTSync, Headphones, Rsync

2. Able to spin down all disks with the exception of the download disk

Usage of Unraid server:

1. Read around 2x per day, big write 2x a week, so no need for a cache disk setup

2. Speeds are fine as is (30mb - 40mb peak)

3. Backup to off site OMV server with Rsync

4. Download server (nzb + torrent)

Details:

1. I use 1 disk as a 'download cache disk' (SDC) and for the config files. The plex transcode directory is on here as well. This way i assume only this disk will be in a full time spin up state.

2. 1 use 1 500gb drive (SDB) for movies, the other (SDF) for TV-Shows and the SDC disk for Misc downloads.

EDIT:

3. ALL config files are located on the SDC disk (unassigned device)

Main issues/questions:

1. Configs of the plugins reset after restart! Really annoying..

Solution: Probably the culprit was the fact the config location was on an unassigned disk.. not sure though

2. The parity disk, disk 1 and SDB (USB drive) will not spin down!

Solution: The docker image was located on disk1!! which is the standard setup..

3. Is the current config/setup all right?

Solution: Wasn't. Now it seems to work allright

Any help is much appreciated!!

Thanks is advance.

Are you using all these apps as plugins or dockers?

I would suggest to use one of you 500 GB disks as cache drive. Not to speed up your writes but to store your configs and your download.

In that way the array can spin down and only the cache keeps spinning.

If you are using plugins, make sure all your configuration is set to be stored in the cache disk or the flash. Since unraid runs completely in memory all other data gets lost on reboot.

If you use dockers, use /mnt/cache/appdata to store the config for the same reason.

I have all my dockers and downloads on the cache drive and move the complete files to the array once the download finishes.

Main issues/questions:

2. The parity disk, disk 1 and SDB (USB drive) will not spin down!

3. Is the current config/setup all right?

First, why not set one of your 3 unassigned devices disks as a cache disk in unRAID?

1: This is telling me that your config is being stored in RAM by mistake. You should make an Applications folder on the disk you want to remain spun up (on a Cache disk [Cache Only Share], or Unassigned Devices Disk) and point your configs at that folder.

2: Parity and Disk 1 are connected and likely one configuration issue. The USB is likely another configuration issue. Some of these applications have settings which can keep the disks spun up. Plex will scan for new media every few hours if you don't disable that in the settings... but more importantly we need to know about the configuration files and where they are stored.

3: Given what you want it to be doing and what it is instead doing, no I don't think it's configured right.

@Roland:

All apps are plugins except NZBget, which is a docker.

This is a good idea! will make one drive the cache drive. Will have disable shares from using the cache though.. Wouldnt be a good idea to store sensitive data on the cache drive which is quite old..

@gundamguy:

Could you explain #2? Plex only uses media on the unassigned drive disks..

#3 is a fair point, doesn;t seem to work quite right  ;D

@Bjonness406:

Appdata (config) is located on the SDC disk which is a unassigned device.

Good point about the docker location!!! It is on Disk 1!

Will try and move it to the new cache disk.

Thanks all for the reply's! I will report back  ;)

At this point I'm pretty sure the docker location is what's keeping parity and disk 1 spun up. If that's the only issue then Disk 1 and Parity should start spinning down as you expect.  Plex might not be an issue for you at all. As to why SDB isn't spinning down, what's on SDB, just data, or data and applications configurations etc?

@gundamguy:

Thank you!!! the docker image was the problem..

Te recap:

1. Configs of the plugins reset after restart! Really annoying..

Solution: Probably the culprit was the fact the config location was on an unassigned disk.. not sure though. I put de config files on the cache disk and all seemt to be working now.

2. The parity disk, disk 1 and SDB (USB drive) will not spin down!

Solution: The docker image was located on disk1!! which is the standard setup.. Changed it to the cache disk.

3. Is the current config/setup all right?

Solution: Wasn't. Now it seems to work allright  ::)

Thank you all.
