NZXT H440 Case | Any Concerns?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of scoping a new rebuild of my server and I'm trying to determine if the NZXT H440 case is a good choice.  I want something that can hold at least 10 - 3.5" driver internally and will do a decent job cooling.  The price point on this is perfect at $100 but I'm concerned that once I load it up with 10 HDD's that the airflow won't be enough.

[*]Has anyone used this case in a build and any comments on the airflow?

[*]Are there other cases that people might recommend that are under around the $100 price point and would hold 10 - 3.5" drives?

There don't seem to be a lot of options for a low-priced case with 10+ internal slots - NZXT and Rosewill are the main options.  It's more common when you're dealing with that number of drives to go externally accessible hot-swap but that increases the price.  The NZXT 440 is a decent looking case though I haven't worked with it.  It wouldn't be my first choice, though.  I'd first try to fit into an 8 drive Fractal Design Define R5.  If you can spend more then maybe the Lian Li PC-Q26b.  Or go a more traditional route with forward facing 5.25" drives and use drive cages.  I think the NZXT 440 would be decent, but the drive bays look awkward to work with and I share your concern about airflow.

I was looking at the R5 originally just wanted more than 8 - 3.5" drives.  I like that Lian Li case but that fact it can only take a micro-atx board concerns me as I know I'll be upgrading to a server mobo at some point.  I think I may just consider the R5 though as that does appear to have better airflow and filtering.  My other option, as you stated, is to spend more at which point I should probably consider looking at some rack cases or using a case w/multiple 5.25" bays and just use some drive bay docks.

Appreciate the feedback!

Not sure if you decided on a case already, but I have the H440 Razer Edition.  Currently, I have a total of 5 HDs (see signature for more details) and 1 SSD.  Not too long ago, I was running a total of 9 HDs.  With the H440, the hard disk trays can mount 2 3.5" disks (one on top and another on the bottom).  The 3 120MM fans, that are mounted in the front, provide plenty of air to keep the drives cool.  Also, I'd keep an ambient temperature of 72 degrees.  The disk temperatures rarely exceed 32C-34C.  Hopefully this helps.

I looked at the case a while back and I'm not certain how you get 10-11 drives in it without modding. I've contacted both Newegg and NZXT about it and neither responded.

They have a new version that came out last year.. the HDD trays now can hold 2 drives each (top/bottom)

Mine should be arriving in a couple of hours :)

I do use a fractal design XL 2. It is a case that gets overlooked a lot as it got few reviews and it isn't a case many would be interested in. As the Define R5 got mentioned already, I might add this one to the list.

Key difference from the define R5 is the size.

It can fit XL-ATX boards, I currently use a SSI-EEB board with a standoff mod.

It only has 8 2.5" drive bays in default configuration, but the bottom fan spot can be swapped with an additional drive cage which would result in at least 11 drives. 4 additional optical bays would give some room for hot swaps as well.

It is a nice case to fit a desktop unraid server in, as it has a lot of rear ports and other benefits. I use 2 dual slot gpus and 2 usb controllers and there still is some additional room.
