Supermicro X7SBE and S3

Anyone using a Supermicro X7SBE mainboard and was able to configure S3 for it? According to  Supermicro support this board supports S3 ACPI level. Thanks!

Ok, perhaps others will stumble across the same question:

 

The X7SBE can't do S3 and it also won't allow adjusting the fan speed from software (full Slackware or UnRAID). Fan RPMs can be read but not set as they are controlled from the BIOS only. Regardless if the used fans are 3-pin or 4-pin PWM fans. This is kind of sad as this board is otherwise a really very nice board.

 

I started thinking about replacing this board, but I just can't find anything that has all the other neat things, like the build-in IPMI, GigE Intel NICs and the tons of slots (2x PCI-X busses with 4 slots, PCI-E 8x bus) along with the ECC memory and the standard 775 socket.

If I were to do it over again, I would go for  X8SIA.

The only thing I paid close to retail on was 2 add'l CSE-M35T's and the IPMI.

 

I know i could have went with a Norco and I was ready to, but I have supermicro machines already and planned on getting another. I need high reliability, uptime. (and quiet without modding the case).

 

Once I put in the geild fans, I could not hear the machine anymore.

I don't know. I do not have it. I saw it and if I were to go down the road of rebuilding, I would use that board.

Ok. It is a newer series board with integrated KVM and as the Supermicro X7SPA-HF has S3 working and also fan RPM is adjustable from software, chances that this board does it all are great... Definitely worth closer investigation, I would say :-)

I agree. I would go down that road if I were rebuilding, but S3 and adjustable fans are not something I need.

My machine is running 24x7 because I've moved spindles from other machines to this one.

My cache and parity are spinning almost all the time.

 

I have all my fans full blast and it still quiet enough.

 

I really only wanted the newer board for more power savings.

The new machine pulls a heft chunk of power even when idle.

I think it's the CPU and supporting chipset, still it's helped me offload & eliminate a few machines so I can't complain.

Slighty off topic but does anyone have the lights on the norco 4220 working with this board?  I'm talking about the 4 lights next to the power button. Mine aren't coming on so I must have them hooked up wrong.

Power lights are definitely working. Check polarity to LEDs.

Hi,

 

I saw that you made this recommendation recently over the X7SBE. Can you tell my why you'd prefer the X8SIA? I'm putting together a Norco 4220 as my first unraid build. Any other tips you have are appreciated too!

In reviewing this board.  It takes an i3 CPU.

It also supports lots more ram then my current board.

# Supports up to 32 GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory (RDIMM) in 6 DIMM sockets

# Supports up to 16 GB DDR3 ECC Un-Buffered memory (UDIMM) in 4 DIMM sockets

 

This does not mean as much to unRAID, but if you are running vmware it does.

I have a workstation with 4x3ghz cores and 12GB of FBDIMM ram and a 60GB ssd for an XP virtual machine.

The extra ram really does help with vmware and caching of writes. One of these days I plan to put an XP virtual machine over on my unRAID server to do the transcoding for my portables. Maybe even move my slackware dev system there.

The extra ram will really come in play.

 

For normal unRAID fileservices, 4GB is plenty. 2GB is enough. I'm not a normal user.

I have not done any research on this, but it looks as if it does IPMI right on the motherboard.

 

 

Don't get me wrong, I love my X7SBE, IPMI and AOC-SATA-MV8's. It was quick, easy and worked right out of the box.

There was no hassle with this and the HP SmartBuy cheap $29 ram made it worthwhile too!
