May 15, 201610 yr I built my first unraid and I'm quite happy with the whole thing looking to build a second one now and I was going to just use some used workstation as there are plenty available. My question is -- when I look up the specs for these machines the manufacturer will often list drive size maximums usually either 1TB or 2TB or in the alternative it will say 4 drives with 8TB maximum storage. I am looking to use 6TB drives so does that mean that none of these will work? I was under the impression that all SATA controllers were 48-bit LBA so capable of drives of any size. Can someone more knowledgeable explain this to me?
May 15, 201610 yr There was definitely a generation of SATA controllers that only supported drives < 2TB. Some could be updated to support 2TB drives via a BIOS upgrade, some not. I'd research your options carefully...
May 15, 201610 yr But, many times the specifications / descriptions only state what was commonly available at the time, and yet they are compatible with > 2.2TB Once common chipset that does NOT support > 2.2 TB is LSI 1068
