Mobo w/ 10hhd, home upgrade.

Featured Replies

Hi I am looking to upgrade my "home server".

At this point it's very basic, I use windows7 with a regular mobo, an intel i3 and 8gb of ram. I have Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 that allow me to add 8 Sata drives.

I would like to upgrade and I don't really know which direction to take.

I was thinking of getting an intel i5 6400 T (low power) with a new mobo that contains at least 10 sata connection, but to get 10 sata I need to go for a "gaming" mobo. I would like to avoid having to use the Supermicro card. Form factor doesn't matter.

My target is Home server, low power, amd I still want to be able to browse the web and do basic windows stuff, office, music, YouTube, ...(no gaming).

I just need mobo, cpu, ram only.

I need to be able to connect 10 drives, this is my biggest problem.

Any suggestion?

You don't actually mention unRAID. Is unRAID part of your interest?

At this point I am considering it. I am currently running with "nothing" which is why I want to rebuild and start with some good bases. My current config is about 5 to 6 years old.

I still need a fully functional windows in this pc as well.

There are many people here running Windows in a VM on unRAID. You will need a video card for this since any mobo video is used by unRAID and so is not available for VMs. See the KVM subforum here for more about VMs on unRAID.
