"Must Have" Customizations Recommendations?

Featured Replies

I've been poking in the user customizations sections and there's a dizzying array of scripts. To help me narrow down and sift through it, I'd like to know what user customizations do you deem absolutely necessary and couldn't live without?

unMenu, powerdown, preclear

From the user contributed department: preclear, cache_dirs, powerdown.

My preference is a Full Slackware 13.x distro with unRAID added on.  The must-have software items for me include: SABNzbd (Usenet), Transmission Daemon (Torrents), Eggdrop (IRC Bot), CUPS (Printing), apcupsd (UPS Daemon), OIdentD (Auth/Ident Daemon).

unMenu, powerdown, preclear_disk.sh

I would add apcupsd to that list. It, in combination with the "powerdown" script will allow an unattended clean shutdown in an extended power outage.

E-mail notification.

I've been thinking about this but I'm wondering HOW this is being used by people. For example, I'm thinking it would email me whatever problem it was experiencing, etc. but there really isn't anything I can do about it immediately as I'm probably at work or something and the unRAID would be at home or is the idea that there's no reason to actually check anything UNTIL you get an email notification of some event?

I get emails every hour to make sure everything is working at my house like it should be.  If an email comes through and I see something wrong, I usually SSH into the machine from work and power the server down from the command line.  From there I check everything when I get home to see what has happened.

Agreed.  And if we're talking about add'l packages easily added via the unMENU package manger, I'd include the bandwidth monitor (in conjuction with unMENU / myMain performance page).  Maybe not "must have", but I use this a lot to be able to see levels of drive and network activity.
