flintlock1
Hi there, I have at the moment an I7-4770K cpu in my Gigabyte Z-87-OC motherboard that i use for my main Unraid server. Could anyone suggest an equivalent or better cpu, i.e. a 4770 non k cpu, so that i can use full virtualization with my system please. Pricing is also an important point, as until i can free up/replace the 4770k to sell, my funds are limited. Link to comment
tdallen
The Core i7 4790 and Core i7 4790K are still available, both support VT-d. Link to comment
flintlock1
Prices here in the U.K. for the 4790 are around £215 pounds second hand. Link to comment
tdallen
Your Core i7 4770k is a 10,149 Passmark CPU. It's one of three LGA 1150 Core (non-Xeon) Haswell CPUs to break 10,000 Passmarks - the other two are the 4790 and 4790K. So, for an equivalent or better CPU your options are limited - the one you've got is quite nice, aside from the fact that it doesn't support VT-d . By the way, you want to be sure that your motherboard supports VT-d. I couldn't tell from looking at the Gigabyte website - that information is often buried in the manual. Link to comment
flintlock1
I just re-booted my server, and had a look in the bios, it looks like vt-d is supported, but the option to change it is obviously greyed out, because of the 4770K installed. Link to comment
HellDiverUK
The plain 4790 is a great CPU - I have one in my work PC and it really run well. Heck, I'm even using the Intel GPU, running a pair of 1080p screens, and doing quite a bit of HD video editing in Premier Pro and it runs perfectly. Link to comment
tdallen
Yep, I have a 4790 in my home desktop and it runs great. I'm using the IGD at 2560x1440 and do lots of photo editing, etc. Great CPU. Link to comment
flintlock1
Has anyone tried any of the socket 1150 xeon cpu's in this gigabyte Z87-OC mobo at all? Link to comment
tdallen
The Supported CPUs list for that motherboard does list some of the E3 v3 Xeon CPUs and the internet chatter is that it will work but I haven't tried it. If you're using the integrated graphics on your 4770k then you'll need a Xeon with integrated graphics as well. Link to comment
