Help! New User just built my first Unraid - Network Issues

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just finished building my first Unraid server.  Looks like I'm having some issues getting the server connected to the network.

When I plug in the rj45 cable, the light next to the port doesn't come on.  Also, when the other end is connected to the router, the light doesn't go on there either.

I have gone into the BIOS to make sure that the onboard gigabit is enabled.

Here are the stats for the system:

MB ASUS P5G43T-M PRO G43 775 RT

CPU INTEL|PDC E5200 2.5G 2M R

PSU OCZ|OCZ500MXSP 500W RT

Kingston 4GB|KST DTM10/4GB RED R

4 1.5 TB Samsung Ecogreen drives (all recognized by the BIOS)

Looks like the Limetech website download page is down so I d/l version 4.4.2 via torrent.  Put that sucker on the usb drive and it boots up fine.  After I enter root, I tried "ifconfig" and all I get is something that looks like this:

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback

          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0

          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1

          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

I do not get the "eth0" portion of it.

This leads me to think that there is an issue with the gigabit port on the mobo.  does anyone have any ideas or insights into any mistakes that I might have made?

I just bought a Netgear GA311 gigabit PCI NIC, however my friend is telling me to make sure it's a PCI-e. I would like to keep all of hte PCI-e and PCI slots open for future expansions if at all possible.  The Netgear is a temporary fix so I can get the server up and running.  I'll install that as a last resort to see if that works.

Thanks everyone for your help.  Happy Holidays.

Update:

I decided to just install the Netgear NIC card that I bought.    And everything seems to be working fine now.

However, I would still like to get the onboard gigabit  port working.  I would rather keep the PCI-e slot open for future expansion if/when I need more SATA ports.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

wholly,

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I did double check the BIOS and it is enabled.  From past experience, I've found that the ethernet port, when you plug in a rj45 cable to each corresponding end, the light will come on regardless.  The fact that it doesn't come on at all on either end leads me to believe the ethernet port on the mobo might be DOA.

The server is running a parity sync right now and I just purchased a Pro license.  I'll probably install 4.5 after the parity sync and the registration key all at once.  Thanks again for your help.

Has anyone else had good or bad luck with the ASUS P5G43T-M Pro motherboard?  I'm thinking about building an unRAID server, and that looks like a pretty nice board.  But, I'd hate to get it only to find the onboard network controller doesn't work in unRAID.
