Newcomer questions about unRAID

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have been thinking about moving my server pc over to unRAID, but I have a few questions about it first.

I intend to run unRAID (as much as possible) off of a 250gb ssd, which will be running a plex docker and (hopefully) a smb share. I also want to run Windows 10 off of a 160gb hdd.

Would that setup work?

Can smb shares be setup in unRAID, without needing a docker or vm, etc?

Is it possible to use the ssd like that?

Do I need to have a parity disk?

Can unRAID boot without a GPU?

Can unRAID boot from one nvidia gpu, the Windows 10 system from another, and not have an SLI motherboard?

Thanks

SMB shares is one of the most basic functions of unRAID since it was originally designed as a NAS operating system.

If you aren't going to build a storage array, and will only use virtualization to create a Windows 10 VM, what do you see as the advantages of unRAID?  I'd just run Plex on a Windows PC if that's all you need...  Mind you, I think unRAID is great - but you really ought to take advantage of some of its features...

Some quick answer for a few of your questions.

First, unRAID will run headless.  It does not need a GPU to load.  The first time, it boots it will use the GPU that is assigned in the BIOS.    (You won't being running any Dockers or VW at that point anyway.  They all have to be installed and configured later.)  Normally, you will mange it through a Browser based GUI on another PC.

Second, unRAID OS is completely contained on the Flash Drive and runs from RAM after boot.  The Dockers and VM can be install on SSD's.

If you look at the videos on this page, you should gain a better appreciation for how unRAID can be used:

Third, setting VM is not automatic and not every configuration of CPU, GPU and MB will work.  You first have to define exactly what you want to do and the previously mentioned videos will help you a bit on that score.

Thanks for all the information, Frank!

tdallen, I want to separate the 'server' side of the pc as much as possible from the VM, since very important backups will be made to ssd, while the system will be quite open and exposed to the web and everything that entails. Having an infected VM is ok, while having an entire pc, with important backups, is not. Right now, that's all I want to be able to do, but in the future, I'm sure I will learn of some other features to use! And I want to play around with unRAID.  :P

Having an infected VM is ok, while having an entire pc, with important backups, is not.

I don't really agree with this because this is akin to saying that having one infected computer on your network is OK as long as it's only that one....

Sure a VM that's jailed off would be "fine" but considering you asked about smb I'm wondering just how jailed your VM will be...

I couldn't find much about smb shares for unRAID, and that VM will not have any access to any of those shares at all. All it is doing is acting as an HTPC, so I won't allow it access to anything that it doesn't need, for example any of the smb shares, which it currently does have access to. Hence why I am looking into unRAID.

Have you seen the ransomware thread here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=47961.0

Just having ONE PC on your network infected could lead to problems elsewhere on your network even if you have the system sandboxed in a VM.  This is why I have my network closed off from the internet as much as I can.  Until I feel comfortable enough with my network knowledge I will do as much as I can to keep it protected from the internet.

Thanks for all the info, but my CPU doesn't have VT-d, so I can't get GPU passthrough. This thread can be closed, I have all the info I need.
