You would need to get your friend to give you the USB stick to which his license is tied. You could then copy all the files from your USB stick to his (making sure you do not overwrite his license file).

Is there a way to move just the license file and do some magic to make it work? The USB stick my friend has is only a 4GB USB2. I really don't want to loose the speed difference between the two, and there is a difference. Thanks
May 26, 201610 yr The speed difference will only normally affect the boot up (and then only to a small extent). Once unRAID is booted, everything runs out of RAM, and the USB reading in booting takes only a few seconds even with an older USB2 stick. The rest of the boot time is the time Linux takes to discover hardware and set up the OS. It hardly every accesses the USB device apart from storage of configuration data for the disk drives and shares. Unless you are in the habit of rebooting your server every 5 minutes, you won't notice the difference, and even then it would be minimal.

Thanks Magic to make it work... no, but you could try having your friend use the replacement key process to migrate over the key... keep in mind that this will blacklist the unused USB2. But if I understand correctly that shouldn't be a real issue.
May 26, 201610 yr I would also agree there is little no difference between old vs new USB sticks, large vs small capacity. As others have stated once unRAID boots that difference is null. If your buddy truly isn't using that license I don't think he would have an issue parting with that $2 USB drive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
May 27, 201610 yr Author OK, now I have another question. If I get the key/stick from my friend, is there a way to change the ownership information of the stick from him to me? Just wondering. Thanks for your help and information so far, it has been a learning experience for me in getting the system up and running. David
May 27, 201610 yr I'm not sure if Tom would allow the transfer of a license. I think under normal circumstances it would be a no, but you can always write and ask them if they would allow on a one time basis. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
May 27, 201610 yr ... If I get the key/stick from my friend, is there a way to change the ownership information of the stick from him to me? Just wondering. Click on Policies on the main UnRAID web page and your question is very explicitly answered: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No Key Transfers Lime Technology does not support the transfer of an unRAID Server OS Registration Key to a 3rd party for any reason whatsoever. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
May 27, 201610 yr It seems that the easiest way to achieve your goals is to purchase your own licence for your own USB device and use it on your own server. It's not as though they are expensive, compared with the cost of the hardware and the value of the material you'll be storing on the system.
May 27, 201610 yr Agree with John M => When you factor in the cost of the hardware; the value of the data; etc. the cost of a license is very nominal.
May 27, 201610 yr Author Well then, that is answered. I forgot to look in the FAQs. Thanks for your input and understanding. David
