How Would I Pass a USB Device from Inside Network To unRAID machine

Featured Replies

Maybe I'm going about this backwards, but here is my idea.

I have a Z-Wave USB stick.  I have a home automation docker running on my unRAID server.  Unfortunately, the location of my unRAID server is not working well connecting with my Z-Wave Devices.

I do however have another network computer that is much closer to my devices and is also on 24/7.

Is it possible to connect the Z-Wave Stick to the computer, pass that USB to unRaid, and then have unRAID pass that USB to the dockers?  Or possibly easier, can I just grab the USB device from the computer and use directly in docker without having to pass through to my unRAID server first?

Are you saying that you'd like to be able to pass a USB device across the TCP/IP network?

Correct.

I would like to be able to take a USB device, plug it into a computer on my home network, and allow it to be seen inside of of my dockers.

I figured the order of operation would be

Computer  - unRAID server - Docker

But I guess it could simply be Computer - Docker.

Correct.

Do you mean access the contents of the USB?

I don't know that this is possible.

Do they sell Z-Wave boosters or could you get a second Z-Wave USB and install it as a repeater?

How about a long USB cable?

They do, so I could look into those.

I had thought of this too.  Would be a project to have to run through the walls, but may be the best solution.

How about a long USB cable?

You can get Cat5 USB Baluns that will allow you to use a Cat5 cable instead of fishing that huge USB end through wherever.
