unraid not splitting files at all.

Featured Replies

hi i just setup this unraid server and started copying media files from a external hdd to the share via this command with the unassigned devices plugin.

rsync -av --no-perms --no-owner --no-group --progress /mnt/disks/WD_My_Book_25DA/Movies/ /mnt/user/Movies/

my share name is Movies

so all the movies are copying correctly to disk1 which is a 8tb drive. i was expecting to see disk2 fill when it hit 50% but that is not the case disk 1 is at 58% and all the other disks are at 0

in the share i set the split level to"automatically split only the top level directory as required" which i believe is level 1. the folders movies/movie.name/mkv file and all 7 disks are checked under included disks

so i stopped the transfer went into the share options and changed the allocation method from high water to most free. i stopped the array and started it back up to make sure the changes were applied. i started the rsync transfer again and everything is still going to disk1. all the other disks are completely empty not even the movies folder.

what could be the issue? and after we fix this is there a way i can have unraid split the files that were transferred to disk1 evenly across all the other disks?

Double check your global share settings to ensure you're not excluding the disks by mistake. Also make sure you share includes the disks.

Why bother re-arranging data?

What size are the other disks

There are 2 8tb drives and 6 4tb one 8tb is parity and the 2nd 8tb is disk1

just tested transferring a tv show to my tv show share with the same settings as the movies share but i did it through windows explorer and it copied the files across all the drives as expected.

im guessing its something to do with rsync or something. any help is greatly appreciated i am completely lost here :(

@lionelhutz

global share is set to include "all" disks and exclude none should i check each individual disk or leave it as is?

the reason i would like to re-arrange the movies is because i usually have 5 streams going at once so im trying to distribute the load as much as possible. this is my first unraid experience so i am not sure if the throughput of one disk can handle 5 hd streams. my previous setup was ZFS....

There are 2 8tb drives and 6 4tb one 8tb is parity and the 2nd 8tb is disk1

with this mix of drives and high water allocation, the first 'allocation' is 50% of the 8TB which is 4TB so this is all written to the first disk.    At that point all disks have 4TB left so the next 'allocation' is 2TB.  As it is physically the first disk, this will also get written to the 8TB drive, after which the 4TB drives will start filling until they have 2TB left.

Note that split level overrides allocation method when choosing a drive for a file, so you need to be aware of that as it may constrain which disk a file gets sent to.

@itimpi

ah thats what it is! the 2nd allocation is a extra 2tb and it starts with disk1 -_-! i thought it would start writing on disk2 right after 50% of disk1 was filled

unfortunately for me i canceled the transfer and started it again via windows instead of rsync thinking that would fix it lol.... if only you would have posted 30 min earlier  :-\

side note are transfers from ext4 to xfs usually slow? im transferring at about 50-75 but when i transfer data from a ntfs disk its at 120ish i know these drives can do 155 constant on zfs/windows

thanks a lot for your help guys never would have figured it out with out your help
