What do you recommend for permissions?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've started moving my files to my unRAID 4.5 and get confused about default permissions. I'm not sure yet on how the files will be used either smb, nfs or ssh. I will be using grsync to keep some of the files on an external NTFS drive connected to my laptop (on ArchLinux/NTFS-3FG) in sync with unRAID. I can do grsync over ssh, smb or nfs. On grsync I can decide to keep or not the owner, group and permissions for the synchronization. What would you recommend for owner and permission on files stored in unRAID for best compatibility across access type (smb, nfs, user share) ?

Thanks

Alphazo

Sorry you did not get a response here, holiday disruption perhaps, hopefully this will bump it.  You need a more knowledgeable user than myself for this question.  I don't think there is a large amount of experience yet, as to cross-platform and 'cross-access' permissions compatibility, so you may need to experiment yourself, and let us know what seems to work best for you.  But I'm sure there are users here that can provide both general and specific recommendations.

No hurry. It is not unRaid specific anyway especially when considering cross-networked filesystems like mixing CIFS and NFS. So far I kind of stick with NFS for most of my tasks as it gives me the highest transfer speed on Linux clients.

Thanks for the reply anyway.
