Validate current rig or ideas for replacement

I'm new to the whole unRAID thing and put this system together with parts I had around.  I'm getting a rack in shortly and was trying to decide if I needed to migrate to a rack based build or at least put a backup in the rack.  My files currently sync to a 16TB NAS that is filling up pretty fast.  Community, I ask for your advice. Is my current build ok or do I need a rack build?  Also, whats a cheap setup for a backup rack system?

I will also say that these parts were from some of my gaming rigs that I updated.  I just don't know if they are best when running unRAID.    Also, I'd like any reccomendations for a backup to be capable of 30TB+. (I work on enormous video projects for a few clients as well as youtube and twitch stuff.  Lots of video to store)  I've been looking at some old systems on ebay, but I'm not sure what size drives they can handle.

Your current rig is somewhere between excellent and overkill for most folks, but everything is relative - it depends on what you need.  There's also nothing inherently good or better about a rack mount system - it's a form factor with pros and cons.  Again it all depends on what you need.

What are you doing with your server besides storing lots of video? VMs, Plex, etc?  How much storage do you think you need long term?

Sounds like you're having fun, anyway  :).

Well, is there a benefit to using a Xeon compared to an i7?

Currently I've been playing around with VMs with good results (except for the beta, where my vms lock up every time no matter what I do).

I also run a Plex Docker, a BT Sync docker (is how I backup my array to my NAS), handbrake (which is really slow), and was messing with DokuWiki.

My goal is to have a system that rocks 30-40TB and a backup system that has the same storage. I figure if i need any more than that I'd build a second system and backup that I can just add drives to as time goes on. I also plan on using Sync to backup all of my personal files on all of my personal computers (or looking for other solutions that may work better).  I'm super paranoid about data loss after I lost 4 drives in a 3 day span that caused me to lose some irreplaceable personal files.

Would something like this be suitable to handle being the backup:

I have no idea what size drives (in TBs) this system can hold.

All input is appreciated!

Well, is there a benefit to using a Xeon compared to an i7?

Absolutely ... as long as you use a server-grade (Cxxx chipset) motherboard.  With a server grade motherboard and a Xeon you'll have support for ECC memory [unbuffered with an E3 series; buffered with an E5 series] ... which provides another layer of fault tolerance.

Since you're apparently using this for work-related projects that's something I'd think you'd want to have [although it does NOT eliminate the need for backups of course].

As for whether you build in a tower (or two) or a rack, as noted above that's a personal choice.  If you have a nice rack, that's definitely how I'd go; but I wouldn't buy rack-mount gear without a rack to put it in.
