2gb network between 2 unraid machines

Featured Replies

I am looking to beef up the network connection just for the fun of it but is it overkill?

I want to utilize bonding between both machines but my N40L only has 1 nic so would need to add another, 2nd machine has bonding configured.

But question really is would it be worth trying to link both machines using 2gb instead of 1gb.

Machine 1 hosts all data, Machine 2 runs plex and other dockers. Both machines have SSD and I normally get around 110MB/s when transferring from windows machine to machine 1

Switch: NETGEAR ProSAFE GS748Tv5 LAG enabled

Router: ASUS RT-N66U

ISP: VM (UK) 200mbps down 10mbps up

Overkill?!?!?!  HAHAHAH!!!

Seriously...I ran a 2GbE bonded connection for a few years before upgrading to 10GbE.  It will work just fine.  You wont see more speed on a single connection though.

Dont think im quite ready for 10GbE, my 2nd machine already has dual nics built in, adding a 2nd nic to my N40L will probably cost me around £20ish

My widows pc which is using an asus p5k mobo has 2nics so might try linking that too.

Is there a way to have another unraid machine in different location as offsite backup and maintain speeds, connections using vpn are painfully slow I havent used rsync yet but dont know what the best method is to have multiple sites and fastest speed possible...

sFTP comes to mind but not too sure

Today I added another NIC to my N40L https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001CY0P7G enabled bonding same as my other machine that already has a dual nic.

Problem is when I have both ethernet cables plugged in I lose all connection, as soon as I take 1 cable out doesnt matter which one it starts to work again.

I set it up with static ip and LAG is setup on my swtich. LAG1 for ports 40 and 42. LAG2 for ports 44 and 46.

Also changed bridge name to br1 and br0 is setup on my other machine. What am I doing wrong?

Does this look right? Before it was set to static by default, switched it to LCAP.

However cable 46 is now disconnected and im not at that location to test.

Will have to give it another go tomorrow. Thanks for looking over settings :)

Question... both machines now using 2nic bonding but how do I actually test it?

Network: bond0: IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic link aggregation
eth0: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex
eth1: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex

My desktop is still on 1GbE. Both machines have SSD drives so simply copy and paste job shows around 110MB/s but that was the case before bonding the nics.

Just had a thought... Do I have bond 2 ports on my ASUS router too?

Using putty and MC to get rid of the windows copy and paste I get around the same speeds. So is Dynamic link aggregation the correct method I should be using?

Using LACP you can only get more than Gigabit speed during multiple transfers, i.e., if you transfer a file to one server from your desktop and another from the other unRAID server at the same time both should get gigabit speed.

Ok that make sense, so if for example I have a couple of plex streams and decide to transfer some data I will pretty much wont see loss in speed.

I guess this is a more sensible setup but what if I want to have 2gb transfer speeds between the unraid systems? Thinking about it it might be nice to just see it working but the way it setup now is fine too as I have atleast 4 family members who regulary use my plex server.

If I was to describe the current setup would 2gig pipe be correct term?

Yes.

New Samba 4.4 has experimental smb multichannel, this already works great on Windows and you get max link speed for a single transfer, I still can't get it to work on unRAID 6.2-beta, which includes the new Samba, but hopefully it will work soon.

Thanks for the replies, I dont want to move to beta until I am comfortable with the stable version. I do have 2 built in NICs on my windows machine but only 1 cable available in that room.

So as long as still getting 110MB/s whilst other stuff is going on like plex streams, kodi playback and downloading using sab, it should be setup and working correctly.

I think next to try is set up windows vm so I dont have to RDP to my current desktop then access unraid.

This is turning into a nice little hobby, will probably at some stage try a 3rd unraid machine in 2nd location and see what can be achieved. Its more networking I suppose trying to make everything seamless
