June 3, 201610 yr Hello I have picked following parts, and I'm not sure if everything's right and if everything will be compatible so here I go, with reasoning sometimes: - ASUS P10S-M (Intel C232) - Xeon E3 1230-V5 (officially supported by the motherboard) - KINGSTON ValueRAM, 16GB (KVR21E15D8K2/16) (officially supported by the motherboard) - Corsair RM750i (750 Watt, Single 12V Rail) - SHARKOON T9 Value (because of the many 5.25'' slots) - 3x ICY BOX IB-545SSK (in the 5.25'' slots for future compatibility) - 2x Samsung 850 EVO Basic (250GB) (SSD Cache Drives in RAID-1) - 2x LSI 9211-8i SAS Controller, PCI-E 8x (with IT firmware, not sure tough if this will work on this board, as it is not on the official compatibility list from ASUS) - WD Red NAS Drives (I have 4x 4TB disks and will start with additional 6TB or 8TB disks, not sure yet and not sure yet about the quantity.) Software that will run: unRaid 6 Docker Plex Crashplan and various other software in docker Maybe a (virtual) Windows Server 2012 r2 essentials (for windows client backups). So is this compatible and is this a good setup? It will replace a NAS which doesn't deliver enough power (and space) anymore for my needs. Thanks
June 3, 201610 yr Looks like a good build. Since the motherboard is fairly new I haven't seen anyone use it yet but Asus makes good quality components. I'm not familiar with the Sharkoon case but looks like it will do the job combined with the Icy Boxes, but do keep an eye on airflow. The LSI based controllers are widely compatible, I'd expect good results.
June 4, 201610 yr Author Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have only made good experience with ASUS boards so far, that's why I wanted to go again with ASUS (and Supermicro is just too expensive over here). I've chosen the P10-M because of the many PCIe slots for the LSI cards and because of ECC Ram and a USB slot on board. Plus it has a onboard VGA chip, which is never a bad thing to have. I would also take another Case, but there aren't many here with 9 5.25'' slots. Only AEROCOOL Strike but I don't want my server looking like a gaming rig for a teenager. Also, I've read, that the Sharkoon T9 has no metal fins in the 5.25'' bays, which means the Backplanes would slide in without having to remove something. I just now noticed, that there are also Icy Box IB-565SSK Backplanes, which have one 80mm fan insted of two 60mm ones (which would be less noisy I guess) and the fan is replaceable. They cost exactly the atm so, I guess these would be even better. Although, they seem fairly new, as I have not found anything on them in the internet and in the lime-tech forums. Airflow would be achieved, with the fans of the backplanes in the front blowing in the air, and one Scythe fan in the back blowing the hot air out. I would use a scythe cpu cooler (either a mugen or a big shuriken, not sure yet). As I have no dGPU in there and the CPU won't be at much load (when not transcoding or something like that) I think that this should be enough, as there shouldn't be any very high temperatures expected. I think, I'll go with the WD Red 8TB drives, as they have shown better performance in the reviews, and come with almost the exact same cost/GB as the 6TB version. Plus, I'm future proofing a little... One last question: as I would like an automated backup for all the clients in the household, I think I'll setup a virtual windows server on unRaid. I mean, of course there are tools like crashplan etc. which can do that, but what I've read is that Windows Server can wakeup the clients in the night, perform the backup and shut them back down when it's done. That sounds great. This way I could do a backup for example every night without disturbing anyone using the PC during the day. Would this work with this system? And how much performance would get lost because of the always running windows server in the background (it is idle most of the time, but still running I guess...) Thanks
