Haswell G18XX CPU

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am looking to move to 6 SATA's.

I figure that I might as well go for a revamp:

Considering the Haswell G18XX CPU coupled with the GIGABYTE GA-H97N mobo.

or

the Skylake G3900 coupled with the GIGABYTE GA-H170N

Any thoughts ?  Recommendations on RAM ?

Thanks.

A Celeron will work but it's a low end chip - Passmark scores in the mid/high 2,000s for the 18xx and around 3,000 for the 3900.  For $10 more I'd move up to Pentium G3258 and get to almost 4,000 Passmarks. It all depends what you want to do with your server.  unRAID will probably work with 2GB of RAM but I would start with a minimum of 4GB since memory is so cheap. Again, it depends on what you want to do with your server.

My Server is used for:

1. Serving Kodi requirements

2. Storing Photos +  documents

My principle aim is balance power consumption against need.

The Skylake Pentium looks good.  What do you think ?

So that doesn't have big requirements.  What CPU, memory, and unRAID version are you running now?

I've found a decent Haswell board can get better power consumption figures than Skylake.  Haswell's power circuit is in the chip, so is quicker to react, leading to less power being wasted.

I've seen as low as 14W idle from a Xeon E3-1226v3 on a full size board.  That's NUC territory.

Celeron will be fine for your needs. I used a G1840 for a bit before I was bit by the Plex bug and needed more power. Even then I've upgraded to a modest i5 Haswell.

Now i've got this extra G1840 lying around collecting dust  ;)

That'll be fine. My current box has a celeron 1037u motherboard. Onboard 1.8g Ivy Bridge Celeron.

It runs Crashplan, and feeds Kodi without issue.
