HI

I am a new user to unRaid, and been having a fair few problems.

I am using the latest stable UnRaid.

I have narrowed on of them down to the following

I used the tail -f to get this information remotely.

This is causing the server to reboot constantly, and I still have not managed to get through a full parity check yet.

Is this likely to be a faulty card. It's brand new and on an Asus Z9PA-D8 and on the latest bios, which is also brand new.

I have 2 x E5-2670

32 GB DDR3 1333 ECC

1 x 4 TB Seagate NAS Drive Parity

3 x 4 TB Seagate NAS Drive

1 x 2 TB WD Red

1 x 250 Samsung Pro SSD Cache

EVGA Supernova 750W Fully Modular 80+ Gold Power Supply

I appreciate your help.

Kind Regards

Lee

Please see Need help? Read me first!, and attach the diagnostics zip.  The small syslog pieces are only slightly helpful.

I'd have to say, just from the syslog excerpts, that your SAS card is not compatible, don't know why.  Are you sure that there were unRAID user reports that your SAS card worked with unRAID?  Cables won't help, it's the card that's non-operational.

This is what the kernel is currently seeing:

02:00.0 Serial Attached SCSI controller [0107]: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 [1000:0087] (rev 05)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device [1043:8583]
Kernel driver in use: mpt2sas
Kernel modules: mpt2sas

In this 6.1.9 syslog, it appears to be working fine!  You have 2 drives attached on it, Disk 4 and the parity drive.  Are you still seeing issues?

Hi

Yes, I could not complete a full parity check.

I have taken one cache drive out, and put the parity and disk 4 on the MB for the moment, and everything is running perfectly. I have now completed a full check, and the system has not restarted since.

It happened with both brand new Pike 2308 cards I had, and 2 x Pike 2008 have just turned up, so I will be testing them later tonight

One thing I did notice is that they run extremely hot. As in I couldnt touch them hot. I am using an Define R5 case, and there is not alot of air flow down in the corner above PS.

I have opened up the rear IO Plates, have a small desk fan blowing into the corner of the case now. So now i can touch them.

In that syslog, there were no issues, but they hadn't been used yet, other than mounted.  A parity check would run them hard, so you may have a problem with that card overheating.  Something may be wrong with the card though, because it shouldn't overheat with only 2 drives attached.

Thanks @xthursdayx

This was not a flashing issue, but a heat issue.

To resolve this, I glued a 80mm fan on top of my power supply pointing at the Pike card, and USB Stick. They are in a very similar place on the Asus Z9PA-D8.

Throughout the use of the server, I ended expanding to 12 Hard Drives, and never had a problem with that card again. I also completed this mod into my fathers machine, which resolved his also!

Its now sitting in the corner as I am now using a Ryzen 2 build, and the Asus Z9PA-D8 will be used again as a virtualisation server, as soon as my workshop is completed.

I hope that helps.

Interesting, I've been having some instability and temp issues recently and now I'm wondering if it has to do with the flashed Dell PERC H310 I have my server right now.

In terms of the PIKE 2308 card, did you just follow the same directions cited above for the 2008 card? Or did you run into any differences?

BTW, thanks for replying, despite the necro-thread!

I know this is a old........ post but this just solved a issue i was having with my pike 2308, Drives would error out  or fail at random, so i put a small floor fan on it, tried again and i was able to setup my disk so far without issue. I am going to try one of these from amazon to see if it will move enough air
