June 16, 201610 yr Hi, I have a synology drive from a crashed synology machine and I need to get data off the drive. I first used an external USB dock and was able to access the drive from a VM on Unraid and use ddrescue to make an image of the drive. My USB dock is however a bit flakey and keeps turning off and stopping the process plus is very slow so I then plugged the drive into my Unraid machine in the hopes that I could access it from a VM that way. Here however is my issue, is it possible to give a VM access to an unmounted drive?
June 16, 201610 yr Author Sorry forgot to add, the other possibility would be to install ddrescue directly on Unraid then I could just do the image from Unraid terminal onto an Unraid share, not 100% sure if it's possible to install ddrescue on Unraid though?
June 16, 201610 yr In your case, I suspect the best way is to passthrough the drive to your VM. Don't think Unassigned Device would work in term of data recovery.
June 16, 201610 yr Author That makes sense yes, I don't have an option for that on the GUI however, do I need to modify the VM XML in order to do that?
