Migrating to new PC

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I need some help in setting up my unraid server, I have v6 plus, my previous server somehow (don't ask as I genuinely don't know) it appears the motherboard has become faulty, I power on the PC, comes on for a few seconds and turns off.  Initially though my PSU had gone faulty, tried another working PSU and same fault occurs.

Long story short, I have obtained another pc, I wanted to move my hard drives over to the new system.  I tried it yesterday however did not have much luck, usb booted and loaded however could not access unraid from any pc.  I have seen various threads and guides on the forum advising how this is done, have followed them but no luck.

Anyone advise how to proceed?

Many thanks

Alam

What have you done exactly? What are the diff betweent the old and new server?

As far as I know, it should be pretty straightforward plug-and-play because unRAID stores drives serial for array config.

I've literally moved the existing hard drives to a different system, new motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc.  Hard drives haven't been touched (formatted) and was working fine the last time I used it (on the old machine).

That's precisely what I though upon reading various threads in the forum that its fairly straight forward.  As I mentioned unraid does appear to load and goes through its usual cycles.

I think before doing anything else perhaps try some troubleshooting with your original machine. How old is the motherboard, make and model? Does it post as in do you get a beep?

Has it been overclocked? Have you tried setting bios settings to default and or clerared CMOS? If its very old the battery may need replacing. I know you have said the PSU appears ok but are you able to get the machine to post without any hard drives connected?

As far as I know unraid would boot up in any PC as long as USB is set to boot device.

I wouldnt go moving hard drives until you have done some troubleshooting.

Hello Bally,

Thanks for the response, have tried various trouble shooting, reset the CMOS, changed motherboard battery, the new psu was from a working pc so hence I knew it cannot be a psu problem.  Removed RAM, cleaned and tried again, pretty much anything I can think of I tried and no luck.

Overclocked, no running stock since its been built which is a approx 3-4 years.  When turning on it does not post and no beeps.

Kind Regards

Do you get any leds on your motherboard coming on? If your not getting no POST beep it does look like the motherboard is potentially dead. Looks like you have done all the right checks but clearing CMOS would clear your overclock unless you have saved the profile depending on Motherboard.

As mentioned earlier you should be able to remove the USB put in new machine without any drives and UNRAID should load. If that happens then I would only the start moving the disks.

But plese wait for some more replies as I have not done this and there might be some steps im missing.

Having decided that the original server probably has a faulty motherboard, I understand that you've moved on and want to use new hardware. The first thing I'd do, before connecting any hard disks, is connect a keyboard and monitor to it and configure its BIOS to boot from your unRAID flash device, then choose the Memtest option from the menu and set it running for, say, 48 hours. If you get that far then you'll be in a good position to boot the unRAID OS. But while you're waiting please post information about your new hardware, including the power supply.

If you think it is booting into unRAID but you just can't access it on the network then maybe a networking issue. Since you said USB booted and loaded I assume you must have a monitor attached. Does it get to the login prompt? If so you can get your diagnostics from the command line. See v6 help in my sig.

Hello All,

Took on board the various replies and tried yesterday, disconnected all the hard drives and all that is connected is the usb with unraid.  Appears to be booting from the usb, unraid bzroot file loads etc the goes through various checks etc and then the screen goes blank.  Normally at this point the command prompt appears, this however doesn't.  As for networking, the lights next to the port and also my router come on indicating that the network connection is live.

I'm running out of ideas here, anyone suggest anything?

Have you tried logging in "blind"? After the screen goes blank wait a little while then type "root" and press Enter. Then type your password, if you've set one, and press Enter again. Then type "diagnostics" and press Enter. Wait for the files to be collected and zipped to the USB stick. Then shut down and remove the USB stick, plug it into a PC and look for the diagnostics zip file.

Morning Gents,

I got it working WOOOHHOOOO!!!,

A great pa-lava but managed to get there at the end.

Tried a few things, new usb with fresh copy of unraid and tested in my system, hey presto it did not work.  So thought its something on my side (PC) that's stopping it from working.  Grabbed my working media centre, plugged it into that, booted and ran straightaway, so another confirmation that its not the software or usb drive, but the pc.  The issue was funnily my motherboard, the CPU was not syncing up with unraid and therefore the software was not able to run.  The motherboard is a gigabyte with amd phenom x4 940.  Noticed that the firmware was quite old, decided to update to most current firmware and it booted straight up.

Want to say thanks to the peeps who responded, one of the most helpful communities i have come across.
