I have a lot of home videos which I want to show friends and family who visit - and which I want to keep separate from movies and TV shows.

 

Which docker do you recommend for that purpose?

Key requirement is that it has to be able to create db entries with just file name and NOT try to go online looking for more info (which is certainly not available).

 

Being able to show the videos on multiple devices especially hand-held e.g. tablets would be a huge plus.

I use Plex for this. Plex has a separate library for home movie that let's you do exactly what you describe.

Was going to say the same, PLEX does exactly what you want, plus you can add custom posters, tiltes and descriptions and control the users who have access to it.
