January 3, 201016 yr If your parity disk dies, then you have an unprotected, but you don't loose any data. You should swap out the bad parity disk asap and rebuild in order to get protection again. *If* during that rebuild time another disk dies, then you loose the data on the other disk only!
January 4, 201016 yr As a reminder - it needs to be as large or larger than the original parity drive. When you start the server you will need to assign the new drive into the parity slot and the system should offer to rebuild/upgrade and recalculate parity. All of the data should be safe as long as none of the other drives fail before parity is recalculated.

January 5, 201016 yr thanks for the help it's nice to know so god commmunity After you have your disks assigned, make a screen print of the device assignment screen. If you use a different motherboard you will want to assign the disks back to the same slots on the array. (Different hardware ports and cabling might get them mixed otherwise. It is not an issue, the array will not start unless they are in the correct slots. just re-assign them as needed (assigning the parity disk to the parity slot is the only critical one) and then you can re-start the array.
