Finally got around to spending enough time with this card to see it's compatibility with unRAID.  Being SAS, I was expecting issues would crop up.  Currently my development server is running unRAID 4.5 along with the RR-2680 driver.  The system boots okay, normal SATA drives can be added to the array with no problems.  However, unRAID crashes with a segmentation fault everytime I try to assign a disk that is hooked up to the SAS card.  Since work is being done on other cards as well, I wanted to see if my current issue is a driver issue with the card or if it is something in unRAID.  

 

In the /var/log/go file I see the following:

ERROR: Module md_mod does not exist in /proc/modules

 

I posted my entire syslog from the evening.  The last two posts are where I started testing mounting the drive on the SAS card in unRAID and are where the errors appeared on subsequent reboots.

To start

 

Do you have the current bios loaded on the card?  It's 1.1  http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/bios_rr2680.htm

 

Do you have the RR card set to JBOD in it's bios?

 

Next I would install unmenu and use the disk management page to try and mount and share a drive that is connected to the RR controller.  If the drive mounts you know it's unraid.  If it doesn't then it could be the driver or the settings in the cards bios.

 

I did this with my LSI card when I was testing it and it helped narrowed down the problem to unraid and not the driver.  Tom has his work cut out for him on these SAS cards since they don't play nice yet with UNRAID.  The LSI card works but no SMART support or temperatures.  IMHO when Tom decides to tackle the SAS/SATA cards he should start with one brand of card and stick with it.  That way he has an "approved" card we can all use.  Sort of like how the original system was tested with the Promise IDE controllers.

I'll put unmenu on it tomorrow evening and see what that gets me.  In regards to SDA1, it is the boot drive, is using EXT4, and is connected via the onboard SATA controller.  I believe the EXT3-fs and EXT2-fs errors appear on this drive as I have built EXT2 and EXT3 support into my kernel.  Is this plausible?

 

Also, looking at my syslog, here is the section that I believe corresponds to my mounting a regular SATA disk and them attempting to add the disk on the SAS card:

Also, I did some test writes to the 320GB drive and it worked fine by itself in the unRAID array.  The problems only begin when I attempt to add the  on the SAS card.

I did this with my LSI card when I was testing it and it helped narrowed down the problem to unraid and not the driver.  Tom has his work cut out for him on these SAS cards since they don't play nice yet with UNRAID.  The LSI card works but no SMART support or temperatures. 

 

 

Ran smartctl -i on all the drives and this SAS card also appears to not support SMART; we have one common thread.

Wow, those syslog pieces show horrendous issues, 'kernel taints' and 'Oops' and restarts (within the same syslog piece)!  There is absolutely no point in analyzing any other errors and behaviors.  When a building foundation is crashing down, there are no conclusions to be drawn from broken chair legs and cracked vases.  When the kernel foundation is corrupted, there is nothing to be learned from any other problems that show up.  I would remove and shelve that card for awhile, until you hear of better drivers available.  There is no point in even testing it, if it corrupts the kernel.

 

Just my opinion, but it would be better to attach the complete and unaltered syslog for analysis next time.  What would be especially helpful is to include 2 syslogs, one without the card and one after installing it with no other changes, except possibly a connected drive.  It makes it much easier to isolate what is different and what is normal for your hardware.

That is expected, brand new disks are empty, and do not contain even an MBR or partition table.

 

I believe once Tom figures out how to handle the SAS protocols and the lack of SMART information on some of these controllers, supporting additional cards should not be much more difficult than adding new SATA drivers.

 

Support for protocols and such, and for new hardware has to be first provided by the Linux kernel coders and by the hardware driver people.  Tom just has to include the drivers and modules once they are robust and stable enough.  He may have to tweak his code for the new device prefixes, such as ata_, scsi_, usb_, sas_(?).  SMART support has to be added by the driver programmers, and possibly by the protocol coders, if it isn't there already.  There is very little Tom can do but wait for good modules.

I haven't tried yet - I recently acquired a second-hand RR-2680, but I need to have some time with my second server (which is not on 24/7) in order to try it out.  I note that it uses the same Marvell chip as the AOC-SASLP-MV8 controller (the Marvell 88SE6485).  That controller is supported and is working well with the 5.0 rc8a release.  So in theory, it might be OK...
