July 10, 20169 yr New poster here. I've been looking for a setup to split my hardware between two users. I've ran across a couple windows based programs for multiseating (terminology correct?) but non of them really seemed like the solution for me. Then I ran across someone who recommended unRaid and I think it is exactly what I am looking for. But there are a few things I am not quit certain about. hardware specs: Asus X99 MB Intel 5830k 64gb ddr4-3200 950 Pro 512 950 Pro 256 (current boot drive) 2x480 ssd 2x3tb 2x980ti RX480 I've been playing with 6.1.9 and am capable of getting things up and running without my two 950 drives. After some playing around I noticed the beta drivers and the support for NVMe. Downloaded and recognized everything without issue. My question, though, is can I set up a VM with JUST my 950's (similar to the setup I am using now with the 256 as my boot drive, 512 as my storage drive), and a second VM with the ssd/hhd combo? Thanks for great software! and any help in this matter!
July 10, 20169 yr First and foremost, it is possible to passthrough either or both your 950 to a VM e.g. via PCIe passthrough or scsi bus, failing those, there's Unassigned Device plugin. However, you are thinking "workstation" when you should be thinking "server". Please bear with me here. In your scenario, for example, you probably would want the HDD in the array (note, you need to have 1 of those 3 HDD as parity so only 6TB storage total) and 2x480SSD as cache. You can then install the 2nd VM vdisk in the cache (perhaps using 64GB) and the rest of the cache space can be shared. Alternatively, you can set the 950 Pro 512 for VM1, 950 Pro 256 for VM2. Also, no SLI / Crossfire, AFAIK.
July 11, 20169 yr Author Great, thanks for the info. I'll be setting up a test station tomorrow and playing around with the configuration. I'll play around with your recommendations and see how it pans out. Thanks again!
